FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU director of intercollegiate athletics Chris Del Conte has announced that men's golf head coach Bill Montigel has signed a contract extension through 2021.
"It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of the TCU family for the last 39 years," Montigel said. "I am looking forward to the continued success of our men's golf program, as well as the University and athletics department as a whole. Our administration's commitment to excellence has always been clear and I am happy to continue to be a part that commitment."
Montigel is currently in his 30th season as TCU's men's golf head coach, and his 39th year overall as a member of the Horned Frogs' family. He became TCU's golf coach in 1987 after an eight-year stint as an assistant coach for TCU's men's basketball team.
It was during that near decade as a basketball assistant coach that Montigel became a top recruiter and signed current TCU men's basketball head coach Jamie Dixon, who went on to help the Frogs win back-to-back Southwest Conference titles.
In 1987, Montigel transitioned into TCU's men's golf head coach and has seen nothing but success since. Starting in 1989, the Frogs have qualified for unprecedented 27-straight NCAA Regionals, and advanced to 18 NCAA Championships. Montigel is one of only three current coaches to earn a regional bid each of the last 27 years, joining Clemson's Larry Penley and UNLV's Dwaine Knight.
In his 29 seasons, Montigel has guided 15 different golfers to 25 All-America honors and racked up eight conference championships. Along the way he has been named conference coach of the year seven times in four different conferences.
In addition to its on-course success, the TCU men's golf program has also had 12 All-America Scholar selections in the last 10 seasons, including last year's Dutch Meyer Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, Giulio Castagnara.
