The Opponent
Texas Tech comes into Monday with an 11-5 overall record, including a 1-4 mark in league play after falling in the closing seconds to No. 22 Baylor Saturday, 63-60. Against the Bears, Devaugntah Williams had a game-high 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Aaron Ross was also in double-figures, scoring 14 points in 23 minutes of action.
On the season, Williams is tallying 13.8 points per game and 3.6 boards a contest. Toddrick Gotcher follows, averaging 11.3 points a game, while shooting a blistering 46 percent on the year.
The Series
TCU and Texas Tech will play for the 126th time in program history Monday. The Red Raiders lead the all-time series, 76-49, but the Frogs have won six times in the last 14 meetings after sweeping Tech a year ago. The Frogs' series history against the Red Raiders ranks No. 7 among the lengthiest in the history of the program.
News And Notes Against Tech
TCU head coach Trent Johnson has faced Texas Tech eight times in his career. Johnson has captured three victories over the Red Raiders throughout his tenure, including the Horned Frogs' first sweep a year ago over a conference counterpart since joining the Big 12.
In the two games last season, the Frogs held Texas Tech to below 60 points in each contest, while shooting a combined 45 percent in the two outings.
Tough At Home In League Play
Dating back to last season, TCU has won four out of its last six Big 12 Conference home games heading into Monday night, having defeated Texas, Texas Tech, K-State and Oklahoma State. The only losses during that stretch came to No. 17 Iowa State in the regular-season home finale a year ago and versus No. 17 West Virginia earlier this month. In the four victories, the Horned Frogs have held all four under 60 points for the game.
Finding The Ball
Junior Karviar Shepherd needs only three more rebounds to total 500 boards for his three-year career. The Dallas native has awhile before he cracks the program's top-10 though as he trails former Frog Bingo Merriex (2000-03), who currently ranks No. 10 all-time in program history, by 165 rebounds heading into Monday night. Since 2010, Shepherd has posted the most rebounds for a career among any players in the last six years. J.R. Cadot recorded 424 boards from 2010 through the 2012 season.
Guarding The Rock
TCU is a perfect 6-0 this season when holding its opponent to under 40 percent from the field. The Horned Frogs limited Texas to only 37.1 percent from the floor, including only 14.3 percent from behind the arc, in its last home outing. By defeating UT, the Frogs also held their fifth opponent this season to 59 points or less. In the last two season's against league foes, TCU has now held six opponents to under 60 points. The Frogs' only loss during the six games came in a 58-53 setback at K-State last January.
Close Calls
In all but three of TCU's eight losses this season, the Frogs have either led or trailed by only single digits in the final six minutes of the contest. Against West Virginia, TCU led by one with 5:56 remaining in the game. Against Rhode Island, the Purple and White took a two-point lead with 2:16 left to go. The Frogs also cut it to three against South Dakota State with 3:30 showing on the clock in the second half. The Purple and White closed within seven in the final seconds at No. 1 Kansas. The only time TCU didn't either lead or trail by single digits in the final couple of minutes came on the road at Baylor, Oklahoma State and Washington.
Comparing The Two
A trend has become apparent in TCU's 17 games this season. In the nine wins, the Horned Frogs have gotten to the line 263 times. In the eight losses, TCU has only attempted 165 free throws. The Purple and White have also shared the rock better in the eight wins, tallying 50 more assists in games won. The Frogs have also accounted for 78 more rebounds in games won this season.
Grab The Rock
TCU is a perfect 8-0 this season when out-rebounding its opponent. The Frogs are 35-15 all-time under Trent Johnson when out-rebounding the opposition. TCU out-rebounded Texas in its last home outing, 40-31.
