FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU women's basketball program is seeking male basketball practice players for the 2015-16 season to help take part in practice with the team on a regular basis.
The practice team offers the Horned Frogs a chance to practice against someone other than themselves and helps prepare the squad for the rigors of Big 12 competition. Players will be expected to be competitive, knowledgeable and able to take direction from coaches. They will also be outfitted with TCU Nike gear.
"It is important for us to utilize the male practice squad to replicate what we will see offensively and defensively from our opponents, as we prepare for games," head coach Raegan Pebley said. "We need these guys to be competitive, skilled and have a great understanding of what it means to be a Horned Frog. If you have a love of basketball and respect being a part of a team, then this is a great experience."
All players must meet NCAA qualifications. It is preferable that athletes have high school basketball experience and availability during practice times for the 2015 fall semester, scheduled for 6:30-9:30 a.m., on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 2:15-5:15 p.m., on Tuesday and Thursday. Times for additional practices on the weekend are to be determined.
For those interested in joining the practice squad, please contact associate head coach Hanna Howard at 817-600-3524 or at hanna.howard@tcu.edu.
The Horned Frogs open the 2015-16 season on Friday, Nov. 13 against Sam Houston State in Fort Worth, the first of eight non-conference games at home for TCU this season. The non-conference slate includes a road contest at Texas A&M and a home matchup with 2015 national finalist Notre Dame in the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena on Saturday, Dec. 12.
TCU returns three starters and nine letterwinners from last year's 18-14 squad (9-9, Big 12) that reached the Postseason Women's NIT and won its first postseason game since 2008. Two all-conference selections return for the 2015-16 season for the Horned Frogs including first team selection Zahna Medley and second team honoree Veja Hamilton.
Medley, a senior and All-American candidate, is among the nation's top career scorers with nearly 1,500 points to her name. A two-time first team all-conference selection, Medley is poised to become one of the top scorers in TCU history in 2015-16. She already ranks in the top 10 in six career categories before the start of her senior season. Medley averaged a team-high 15.6 points per game last year, while dishing out 129 assists.
Hamilton, a senior and all-conference candidate, ranked second on the team in scoring at 11.3 points per contest and was the top shooter on the squad at nearly 49 percent from the field.
