FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU women's basketball program will host "Reps for Rylan" on Friday, Aug. 28 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Quad at Brown-Lupton University Union in support of Rylan, a six-year old with deep TCU roots who has acute lympoblastic leukemia.
Individuals can do repetitions in such activities as pushups, situps, jumping jacks and/or air squats as a way to send strength to Rylan and his family. Individuals can also record video messages that will be shared with Rylan.
Rylan was born in Fort Worth and was diagnosed with acute lympoblastic leukemia in 2011 at Cooks Children's Hospital. He was already awaiting a bone marrow transplant after an experimental treatment, but has to be cancer free first. His childhood has been filled with chemo and spinal taps, and he has lived in the hospital for months at a time, and yet he is full of joy.
Earlier this week, it was discovered that he has relapsed for the third time.
An avid Horned Frogs fan, Rylan watches all of the teams on campus - including women's basketball games. Rylan was also the star of the team's banquet in the spring, presenting a "Super Hero Award" via video to an unsung hero of the women's basketball program. Currently living in California, Rylan is the son of a TCU Sig Ep brother, Jason Macomb, from the Class of 2004. Macomb is a native of Bridgeport, Texas.
"Rylan has taught our team so many lessons about life and his spirit is truly contagious," said head coach Raegan Pebley. "No matter what his day had in store, he always found a way to send our team a video pep talk before and after every game this past season."
You can learn more about Rylan and his battle via social media by visiting @jamacomb on Twitter, @jamacomb on Instagram or https://www.facebook.com/groups/teamsmilinrylan/ on Facebook.
The Horned Frogs open the 2015-16 season on Friday, Nov. 13 against Sam Houston State in Fort Worth, the first of eight non-conference games at home for TCU this season. The non-conference slate includes a road contest at Texas A&M and a home matchup with 2015 national finalist Notre Dame in the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena on Saturday, Dec. 12.
TCU returns three starters and nine letterwinners from last year's 18-14 squad (9-9, Big 12) that reached the Postseason Women's NIT and won its first postseason game since 2008. Two all-conference selections return for the 2015-16 season for the Horned Frogs including first team selection Zahna Medley and second team honoree Veja Hamilton.
Medley, a senior and All-American candidate, is among the nation's top career scorers with nearly 1,500 points to her name. A two-time first team all-conference selection, Medley is poised to become one of the top scorers in TCU history in 2015-16. She already ranks in the top 10 in six career categories before the start of her senior season. Medley averaged a team-high 15.6 points per game last year, while dishing out 129 assists.
Hamilton, a senior and all-conference candidate, ranked second on the team in scoring at 11.3 points per contest and was the top shooter on the squad at nearly 49 percent from the field.
