NEW ORLEANS -- TCU's Trevone Boykin has been named to the watch list for the Manning Award, the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, has its winner selected by a voting panel which includes national media as well as Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning.
Boykin, who also appears on watch lists for the Maxwell Award, Davey O'Brien Award and Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, is the Big 12's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Last season, he finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting, was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and recipient of the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.
A senior from Dallas, Boykin set TCU single-season records for passing yards (3,901), touchdown passes (33), touchdowns responsible for (42) and total offense (4,608). Boykin ranked third in the nation in total offense at 354.5 yards per game. He became just the third quarterback since 2009 to average at least 300 yards per game passing (300.1) and 50 rushing (54.4). The others were Heisman Trophy winners Robert Griffin III and Johnny Manziel. Boykin had a TCU single-game record seven touchdown passes with a career-best 433 yards passing against Texas Tech. He ran for a career-high 123 yards and three touchdowns versus Kansas State while passing for 219 yards and another score.
Boykin posted a career-high 559 yards of total offense (460 passing, 55 receiving, 44 rushing) against Iowa State for the second best single-game total in TCU history. The 460 yards marked his third game of at least 400 yards in the air, while his 55-yard touchdown reception was the first of his career. He ranked second on TCU in rushing last season with 707 yards and eight touchdowns on a 4.7 per carry average.
Boykin is one of 10 returning starters on offense for the Horned Frogs, the nation's most-improved team last season in both total offense (+188.2 ypg) and scoring offense (+21.4 ppg). TCU ranked in the top-five nationally in both categories. The Horned Frogs also have the nation's longest-current streak (15 games) of scoring at least 30 points. TCU set single-season school records for points (604), first downs (331), plays (1,038), passing yards (4,240) and total offense (6,929).
