TCU's Rally Falls Short In Loss At DBU

Mitchell Traver (6-2) started for the Horned Frogs and took the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits. He struck out seven. Drew Gooch allowed a hit and struck out a batter in his inning of work. Brian Trieglaff surrendered two runs (one earned) on three hits in his lone inning of work. Riley Ferrell retired all three batters he faced in the eighth.
A one-out double from Daniel Sweet kick-started the Patriot offense and spurred a two-run second inning. An infield single from Tagg Duce followed by a stolen base had two runners in scoring position with only one out. Chane Lynch hit a high pop up to the right spot and the ball fell in for an RBI-single. A two-out chopper over first base off the bat of Nash Knight capped the scoring.
The Patriots added to their lead in the bottom of the third. After a lead-off error, a stolen base followed by a wild pitch had the runner on third with one out. Justin Wall hit a bloop single into right to push the Patriots' lead to 3-0.
TCU finally got on the board in the fourth. With one out, Evan Skoug ripped a single to right. He raced to third on a Dane Steinhagen base knock. Nolan Brown delivered a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Skoug, cutting the deficit to two, 3-1.
A pair of errors in the fifth helped the Patriots add to their lead. Drew Turbin moved to second on an errant pick-off throw and was standing on third with one out after a sacrifice bunt. An error with the infield playing in allowed Turbin to score, giving Dallas Baptist a 4-1 lead.
The Frogs combined to leave five batters on in the sixth and seventh innings as they tried to rally. In this sixth, they had runners on the corners with one out and failed to score. In the seventh, TCU loaded the bases with two outs and couldn't get the big hit.
Dallas Baptist picked up what would turn out to be a pair of critical runs in the bottom of the seventh. Two hits and the Frogs' fourth error of the game had two in scoring position with two outs. Both scored easily on a double down the line from Daniel Salters to make it a 6-1 game.
TCU finally put a crooked number on the scoreboard in the seventh inning to pull within two, 6-4. Steinhagen, Brown and Elliott Barzilli each singled to load the bases with nobody out. Garrett Crain drove in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. Derek Odell greeted the Patriot closer with a two-run single through the right side to make it a 6-4 game, but that was as close as TCU would get.
With the loss, TCU falls to 34-9 on the season. The Frogs will wrap up their four-game road swing with a conference series at West Virginia. First pitch in Morgantown on Friday is set for 5 p.m. (CT).
