The offense took advantage of eight walks and three errors to run away with the victory. TCU pounded out 14 hits, four off the bat of Skoug. Nine Horned Frogs registered a hit and eight tallied an RBI.
Cody Jones jump-started the offense with a lead-off double in a first inning that saw 10 Frogs come to the plate and five score. With runners on the corners and one out, Skoug ripped a double to right to drive in the first run of the game. Dane Steinhagen followed with an RBI single. A walk to Derek Odell loaded the bases for Michael Landestoy, who picked up his first career RBI with a walk to make it 3-0. Nolan Brown stretched the lead with a two-run single.
Wichita State scored its lone run of the night in the third after a hit batter opened the frame. With two outs, Mikel Mucha double to right field to make it a 5-1 game in favor of the Frogs.
TCU added another pair of runs to its lead in the fourth. A walk and an error with one out put a two in scoring position. Keaton Jones drove both runners in with a base hit to center to make it a 7-1 game.
Another five spot in the fifth pushed the TCU lead to 12-1. Steinhagen got the inning going with a lead-off triple and scored on a Shocker error. Brown picked up his third RBI of the night with a base hit to drive in Odell. With two outs and the bases loaded, Garrett Crain walked to make it a 10-1 contest. Skoug capped the scoring in the inning with his second double of the night to push the lead to 12-1.
Skoug's fourth hit of the night started a two-out rally in the seventh inning. Austen Wade drew a walk to keep the inning going and moved to third on an RBI single from Odell. Jeremie Fagnan collected his second RBI of the night with a base hit to drive in the 14th and final run of the game.
The Shockers had chances to get back in the game, but each time Mitchell Traver (4-0) was able to work out of jams. He stranded at least one runner in five of the six innings he pitched and twice left a pair of runners on. Traver finished the night allowing a run on four hits. He walked three and struck out five in six innings of work.
Brian Trieglaff took over in the seventh and fanned a career high six in two innings of work. Preston Guillory fanned two of the three batters he faced in the ninth to lock up the TCU victory.
With the win, TCU improves to 19-4 overall on the season. The Frogs and the Shockers will square off in game two Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Preston Morrison will get the start for TCU.
