TCU Finishes Fourth in Smallbore

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Hannah Black fired a 579 in smallbore to lead all Horned Frogs in the first round of the NCAA Championships. TCU sits in fourth place with 2,305 points heading into air rifle Saturday morning.
Sally Li, who entered the match tied with Black with a 580-point season average, followed with a 578-point showing of her own. Ariana Grabowski and Mindy Miles each fired 574s, and Katie Bridges shot a 569 to round out the Horned Frog lineup. Each of the latter three were making their NCAA Championship debuts.
Alaska utilized its home-range advantage to take the smallbore national title. The Nanooks had four shooters reach or surpass 580 points, with Tim Sherry (586) and Ryan Anderson (585) leading the way.
West Virginia was the runner-up with 2,319 points. Nebraska edged TCU for the third spot with a 2,311-point showing. TCU's top smallbore outing of the season was a 2,327-point performance in a win over the Huskers and Navy on Jan. 31.
Murray State's Ben Estes boasted the top score of the day's action by shooting a 587. The Racers are sitting seventh after day one.
The Horned Frogs edged Jacksonville State by three points. Kentucky (2,298) trailed the Gamecocks in sixth place and Air Force (2,282) finished eighth.
The championships conclude Saturday when the teams complete the air rifle competition which is slated to begin at 11 a.m. (CT).
