TCU batted around in the first and pushed across six runs to take early control of the game. Cody Jones got the ball rolling with a bunt single. With runners on the corners, Derek Odell put the Frogs in front 1-0 with a base hit to left. Skoug followed with a line-drive home run to left center to make it a 4-0 game. A walk and two hits loaded the bases for Jeremie Fagnan who bounced into a fielder's choice to push the lead to five. Zach Plunkett grounded out to round out the scoring in the frame.
"The ball is definitely making a difference; there is no doubt about it," said head coach Jim Schlossnagle. "It's happening all across the country. I have seen it every day (jn practice) and I saw it all fall. It definitely makes a difference. Today, it was a lighter-air day, there was no wind and we put some pretty good swings on balls. We've got to continue to take the balls and hit the strikes."
A double to left from Cody Jones to lead off the second turned into TCU's seventh run of the game. After a ground out and a walk to Derek Odell put runners on the corners, the duo executed a double steal to score the lone run of the inning.
Three more runs crossed the plate in the third. Nolan Brown led off the frame with a base hit and scored on Keaton Jones' first career home run. With two on, Cody Jones ripped his second double to center to drive in Fagnan for a 10-0 lead.
SIU finally cracked the scoreboard in the fourth as it took advantage of a lead-off error. Two groundouts and a two-out double from Ryan Sabo pulled the Salukis within seven, 10-3.
TCU got the runs right back in the bottom of the frame. With the bases full of Frogs, Plunkett lined a single up the middle to drive in two. Cody Jones' followed with his fourth hit to push the lead back to 10, 13-3.
The Salukies pushed across their first earned run of the series in the fifth. A lead-off walk scored on a two-out base hit from JC DeMuri to make it a 13-4 game.
Elliott Bazilli came off the bench and delivered a one-out triple to drive in Austen Wade, who had worked a walk in his first collegiate appearance. The relay to third bounded past the third baseman, allowing Barzilli to complete his trek around the bases for a 15-4 lead.
Wade reached base for the third consecutive time as he drew a one-out walk in the eighth. Connor Wanhanen's second hit of the day with two outs drove in Wade for the final run of the game.
Tyler Alexander started for the Frogs and went four innings. He allowed three unearned runs on five hits and struck out three. Brian Howard picked up his first career win with two innings of work. He gave up a run on two hits, walked two and struck out three. Travis Evans, Preston Guillory and Brian Trieglaff all pitched scoreless frames to secure the victory.
TCU improves to 2-0 on the season. The Horned Frogs will go for the series sweep Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Alex Young will make the start for the Frogs. The game will be televised on FSSW+.
