The Opponent
No. 20 Texas comes into Monday night with a 13-4 record, including a 2-2 mark in league play after defeating nationally ranked West Virginia in its last outing, 77-50. Against the Mountaineers, Jonathan Holmes recorded his third double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Longhorns to their second conference victory of the year. Texas held WVU to only 24 percent from the field, while out-rebounding the Mountaineers, 44-32.
On the season, Myles Turner has led the way, averaging 11.9 points per game and 6.8 rebounds a contest. Holmes has been just as solid, averaging 11.6 points a game, while shooting 40 percent from the field.
The Series
TCU and Texas will meet for the 170th time on the hardwood, which ranks No. 4 on the Frogs' list of longest all-time series. The Longhorns own a 107-62 series lead, including 13 wins in the last 14 games, and have won nine-straight. TCU's last victory in the all-time series came on Jan. 10, 1995 in Fort Worth. On that night, the Frogs defeated UT, 102-98.
Defensive Domination
In TCU's last outing against Texas Tech, the Frogs made some noise in the record books thanks to a dominating defensive effort. The Frogs held the Red Raiders to the fourth fewest points by an opponent on their home floor in school history. TCU hadn't held an opponent to 42 points away from Fort Worth since doing so at Texas A&M on March 4, 1958 and at Arkansas on Feb. 26, 1951. By holding the Red Raiders to only 14 first half points, TCU limited the Red Raiders to the fifth fewest points by an opponent in a first half in school history. It was also tied for the sixth fewest of any half in program history.
Staggering D
Heading into Monday, TCU has put up some eye-popping numbers nationally on the defensive end of the court. The Frogs rank in the top-25 in the NCAA in blocks per game (No. 12), field goal percentage defense (No. 2), rebounding margin (No. 23), scoring defense (No. 6) and total blocks (No. 14).
Numbers Tell The Story
In TCU's 14 victories this season, the Frogs have out-rebounded the opposition by an average of 10.5 boards. In its three losses, TCU is getting out-rebounded by an average of 8.0 rebounds a game. A noticeable trend has also become apparent in assists as the Purple and White are averaging 15.8 assists per game in wins and only 9.7 in the three setbacks.
Magic Numbers
By scoring over 70 points in eight out of its 17 games, TCU is now 18-1 all-time under head coach Trent Johnson when scoring 70 or more points in a single-game. On the flip side, the Purple and White have held 11 out of their 17 opponents this season to 54 points or below, including nine out of the last 14.
Inside The Last Five
In TCU's three losses this season, the Frogs have trailed by single-digits in the last 5 minutes of the ball game, but couldn't get the victory. In its 14 victories, TCU has never trailed in the last 5 minutes and only led by less than 10 three times against Bradley, Mississippi State and Furman. The Frogs led by only three with only 4:53 remaining in the game against Bradley. The Purple and White led by five versus Mississippi State with 3:38 left to go in the contest. Against Furman, the Horned Frogs led by eight with 34 seconds left to go in the game.
