OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- TCU safety Sam Carter has been announced as one of 30 candidates nationally for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a senior and have notable achievements in the areas of community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Carter, who earned his TCU degree in May, is playing his senior season as a graduate student. He is president of TCU's Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter and also heavily involved with Ignite, the student ministry on campus. He volunteers at Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth as well as with local little league football teams.
A two-time All-Big 12 selection, Carter was named to the 2014 Preseason All-Big 12 Team. He has also been selected to preseason watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Lott IMPACT Trophy and Jim Thorpe Award. He was named by Dave Campbell's Texas Football as the State's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Through two games this season, Carter is among the TCU leaders with 11 tackles to go with an interception, pass breakup and quarterback hurry.
Carter's 10 picks over the last three seasons are the most of any Big 12 player.
Carter led the Horned Frogs last season with five interceptions while tying for second with four sacks. He had 7 1/2 tackles for loss among his 49 stops. The New Orleans native added two pass breakups and a forced fumble.
Carter was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Horned Frogs' 48-17 win over SMU. He totaled five tackles, 1 1/2 for loss and a sack. He also forced a fumble and had two interceptions, including one returned 66 yards for a touchdown.
