SATURDAY RECAP
With our victory over Minnesota and the great atmosphere in the stands through our successful White Out, Saturday was a great day to be a Horned Frog at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
Following our Aug. 30 home opener, I received a lot of feedback about the long lines at our stadium entrances. It provided the impetus to undertake an experiment this past weekend.
As you might know, I'm a big fan of the Discovery Channel. You'll see a lot of migration patterns on there, and we have something similar taking place at Amon G. Carter Stadium right before kickoff. About 30 minutes out from the Minnesota game starting, we had only scanned about 10,000 tickets. Over the next 30 minutes, however, that number was nearly 30,000. I'm very sorry for the long lines. However, it's not a gate or scanner issue, it's instead a migration problem. We simply have too many people waiting until the last minute to enter the stadium.
With a sellout expected for our next home game on Oct. 4 versus Oklahoma, please make sure to arrive early to avoid the long lines at the gate.
As I made the rounds throughout the stadium during the game, I did experience some of the spotty Wi-Fi in the 300 level that's been relayed to me. It's a usage problem up there that we're currently addressing. Please accept our apologies for that.
AMPING IT UP
A special shout out to our friends in TCU Accounts Payable! They're donning the look of the iconic rock band KISS in showing how Amped Up they are for this football season.
KICKOFF TIME SET
In case you missed it from earlier in the week, our Sept. 27 football game at SMU has an 11 a.m. kickoff and will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
PLAY OF THE DAY
Congratulations to Josh Doctson on his spectacular one-handed touchdown catch against Minnesota being SportsCenter's Play of the Day on Saturday.
MUST SEE TV
We appreciate the great feedback on our debut airing of Inside TCU Football with Gary Patterson. The show will air each Thursday of game weeks at 3:30 p.m. CDT on FOX Sports Southwest. Make sure to check your local listings for viewing availability and all subsequent airings after Thursday.
HORNED FROGS DEALING ON THE MOUND
The top-two pitching performances in major league baseball the last two nights have come from Horned Frogs. Andrew Cashner's two-hit shutout for the San Diego Padres on Monday was followed by Jake Arrieta's complete-game one-hitter for the Chicago Cubs last night. Jake was only five outs away from a no-hitter. Brandon Finnegan, just over two months removed from TCU, continues to impress for the Kansas City Royals. He has yet to allow a run while striking out six in 4 1/3 innings over four games.
We also have to give a special tip of the cap to our ageless wonder Scott Atchison with the Cleveland Indians. The former Southwest Conference star is 6-0 with a 2.63 ERA.
Third baseman Matt Carpenter (St. Louis Cardinals) and catcher Bryan Holaday (Detroit Tigers) are also making their mark with an eye on playing in the postseason.
FROM THE TICKET OFFICE
Keep an eye on your mailbox this week. Men's and women's basketball season-ticket renewal information was shipped on Monday. Also, single-game tickets for all our Big 12 road football contests are on sale now. You can renew your basketball season tickets or buy your football tickets online at GoFrogs.com.
HORNED FROG CLASSIC NEARING
Please mark your calendars for Monday, Oct. 20, when the 36th-annual Horned Frog Classic golf tournament is held at Colonial Country Club. For more information, contact John Denton (j.denton@tcu.edu). All proceeds will benefit scholarships for student-athletes through the TCU Frog Club. CLICK HERE for our online registration.
ON THE DOCKET
Just like with our last open date in football, there are still plenty of opportunities to watch the Horned Frogs on campus and in the area this weekend. Our soccer program will take a four-game winning streak into action Friday night at 7 when it welcomes SMU to Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. We'll then close non-conference play at North Texas on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Volleyball will host the TCU Molten Invitational. We open Friday at 7 p.m. versus Sam Houston State, before facing Arkansas-Pine Bluff and High Point on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. Swimming and diving will make its season debut on Friday at UNT, while both our men's and women's tennis programs hit the road for early-season tournament action.
LET'S TALK
Our next online chat on GoFrogs.com will be Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 3 p.m. CDT.
NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE
Last Week's Answer: The underrated 1982 comedy Night Shift, with Michael Keaton and Henry Winkler, is a favorite of TCU associate athletics director Scott Kull. It also produced the classic line, "Oh, that Barney Rubble. What an actor."
This Week: "You took him from geek status to king status to no status."
