Opening Statement:
"Good win for our team and our program. I thought Jordan Kipper set the tone for the game and was outstanding. He pitched ahead in the count and had a really good breaking ball. Kyle Bacak had to block some balls during the game, and I thought he did a really great job. The two runs in the first inning really helped. We are excited to win game one."
On using his "Tuesday" starter to pitch the opening game:
"A lot of schools call it that. He isn't that on our team. Jordan could easily pitch in our weekend rotation. We feel like if he is back next year he will. He has pitched out of the bullpen in those situations before, and we have 100% confidence in him."
On the team's offensive performance:
"For the whole game we played really sound baseball. Jerrick Suiter hit behind the runner and ended up getting a base hit. It's fun to watch us play like that. We aren't going to hit the ball out of the ballpark very often but when the other team gives something we want to be able to take advantage of it. If the third baseman is back and our three hitter is up, we will take a bunt."
On facing West Virginia:
"They have a very potent team that is playing with a lot of emotion, and had a really great win today. They have great starting pitching, and have lost a lot of close games lately. They are definitely a team that can get on a roll in the tournament, no doubt. We have great respect for them and look forward to the opportunity to play them."
3B Derek Odell
On how Cody Jones getting on base helps:
"It happens quite often, which is fun for me. Most of the time he will steal a bag or two so it always gives me an RBI opportunity, which is awesome. Him getting on base is really crucial for our team because he gets us going. His speed threat makes my job a whole lot easier."
On how much fun the team is having:
"We're a real free and easy group and we like to have fun. Things have been going well lately, but its not just see the ball, hit the ball. It's about playing really sound baseball and coach said that we did that today. The whole run we have gone on has been about us concentrating and playing really sound baseball."
P Jordan Kipper
On what was effective today:
"I was able to get ahead early in counts and work off of my fastball really well. It had a lot of good depth on it, which allowed me to get some ground balls. The defense behind me played really well and I was able to throw my slider really well ahead in counts. I could throw them in the dirt when I needed to and Kyle did a really good job of blocking."
