NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin has been announced as one of five finalists for the Walter Camp Football Foundation's 2014 Player of the Year Award.
Joining Boykin as finalists are Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper, Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon, Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota and Arizona linebacker Scooby Wright.
The 2014 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 11, during the 6 p.m. EST edition of ESPN's SportsCenter. The award is voted on by the nation's FBS head coaches and media relations directors.
Also a finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award and Manning Award, Boykin tops the Big 12 and is fourth nationally in total offense (350.2 yards per game). He is on pace to become just the third quarterback since 2009 to average over 295 yards passing (295.8) and 50 yards rushing (54.4). The other two were Heisman Trophy winners Robert Griffin III and Johnny Manziel.
Boykin has set TCU single-season records for passing yards (3,254), total offense (3,852) and touchdowns responsible for (34). His 26 touchdown passes have him one shy of Andy Dalton's school mark of 27 (2010).
A Dallas native, Boykin is second on the Horned Frogs with 598 yards rushing and eight touchdowns on a 4.5 per carry mark.
Boykin was the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week after his TCU-record seven touchdown passes and 433 yards passing in an 82-27 win over Texas Tech.
Led by Boykin, TCU is third in the nation in scoring offense (46.1 points per game) and fifth in total offense (525.8 yards per game). The Horned Frogs are the nation's most improved offense in both total yards (+181.0 ypg) and scoring (+21.0 ppg) from last season. The 21.0 increase in scoring is on pace to set a Big 12 record and would be the largest improvement by any team since Northwestern (24.0 ppg) between 1999-00.
TCU is en route to breaking single-season school records for points, first downs, plays, passing yards and total offense.
