ATHENS, Ga. (August 31, 2013) - A record-setting 21 blocks, including 12 from freshman Regan McGuire, led the TCU volleyball team to a 3-1 (27-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-19) win over Lipscomb in the final game of the Georgia Bulldog Invitational inside the Ramsey Center in Athens, Ga.
The Horned Frogs' (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) blocking performance against the Bison (1-2, 0-0 Atlantic Sun) is now tied for second all-time for team match records, while McGuire's total ties Jennifer Sebastian for first all-time in individual match records.
The first set proved to be a complete battle back and forth between the teams as neither team took more than a two-point lead throughout the set. TCU called a timeout trailing 22-23 and came out of the timeout swinging, recording two kills from Stephanie Holland and Yvonne Igodan to set up the first set point at 24-23. Molly Spitznagle would record two kills to keep the Bison in the match, but a kill from Trisha Langley and a Lipscomb error gave TCU the final push it needed to win the set 27-25
The Frogs fell behind early in the second set and had to call a timeout once they found themselves trailing 12-16. Out of the timeout, TCU went on a 7-1 run to take a 19-17 lead. The Bison would attempt to close the gap, but a balanced attack from Blaire Pickens and Ashley Smith, who both hit above .400 in the set, led to the 25-23 set two victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
TCU held a 10-7 lead to start the third set, but a serving run under Bri McCombs pushed the momentum in Lipscomb's direction as they would take a 15-12 lead. A kill from Holland would end the run, but Lipscomb stayed in the led the rest of the set to win it 25-19.
The Frogs set the pace to begin the fourth set and jumped to a 9-6 lead, but the Bison capitalized on TCU errors to get the match back in their favor and an 11-9 lead. Two service aces from Macy Capen, combined with the six team blocks, put the set back into the control of TCU. A kill from Langely set up match point once again and a rare error from Jewell Dobson sealed the victory for the Frogs at 25-19.
The lefties led the way for TCU with Pickens and Holland each recording nine kills for the Frogs, while Holland also led the team with a .364 hitting percentage. Alexia Heist and Langely guided the offense with 18 and 11 assists, respectively, while Heist also chipped in three service aces. Sutton Sunstrum recorded her third double-digit dig match in a row by finishing with 14 digs.
The Frogs will next be in action on Thursday, Sept. 5 as the team travels to Chicago, Ill., to take on UIC at 5 p.m. The team will then finish out the week by traveling to Milwaukee, Wis., to take on USC and Marquette on Sept. 6 and 7, respectively.
