ANNIVERSARY TIME
It's amazing how fast time goes! Monday marked my four-year anniversary on the job and being part of the great TCU family. It's been an absolute honor to serve you and work for the greatest Chancellor and Board of Trustees in the country. While sitting back the other day and reflecting on the last four years, there was a great sense of pride in what we've been able to accomplish together:
•The opening of a new Amon G. Carter Stadium
•Membership in the Big 12 Conference
•Approval of design of a renovation to Daniel-Meyer Coliseum
•A combined seven national championships (team and individual) in rifle as well as four individual national titles in track and field
•Football making two BCS appearances with a 2011 Rose Bowl championship
•Baseball reaching the 2010 College World Series
•A Walsh Complex renovation that produced a new football locker room, sports medicine center and equipment room
•The addition of the Jane Justin Field House at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium
•Expansion of Lupton Stadium and the announcement of a 20,000-square foot player development area
•The opening of the Physical Performance Center
•Two straight years of sellouts in football season tickets
•Season ticket and attendance records for baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, football, soccer, men's tennis, track and field and volleyball
•A record $47,350,856 in total athletics giving for the 2012-13 fiscal year
•A new Frog Club record-breaking annual giving total of $10,913,881, enabling us to cover all scholarship costs for the first time
•Conference championships in nine sports (baseball, women's basketball, football, women's golf, men's swimming and diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's indoor and outdoor track and field)
•Postseason play for 16 of our 20 sports
•Twelve sports nationally ranked
•Three head coaches (Gary Patterson, football; Jim Schlossnagle, baseball; Karen Monez, rifle) being named National Coach of the Year in their respective sports
•Student-athletes recording their highest cumulative grade-point average since tracking began in 1998
This is all possible because of your support and passion for TCU! We have so much to be proud of while also realizing our work is not done yet. We have many more goals to accomplish, and I'm excited to continue to work for you, our student-athletes, coaches and staff. With your continued support, we're definitely headed in the right direction at TCU!
BASKETBALL BLOCK PARTY SET
We hope to see you Thursday night for our inaugural West 7th Basketball Block Party from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the West 7th Development on Crockett Street. We'll have free transportation for TCU students with buses leaving campus at 5 p.m. and returning at 8 p.m. Meet our men's and women's teams while also hearing from the coaches. The event will include a pep rally, food and beverage, shooting contests, the TCU band and spirit and interactive games for the family.
FROG CLUB TAILGATE
In addition to all the activities surrounding Saturday's football game versus Texas, the Frog Club is hosting a tailgate for donors who qualify at the Purple & White Benefactor level of the Frog Club Donor Rewards Program. The tailgate will begin at 2:30 p.m. behind the northwest corner of the stadium with food provided by Reata, hosted bars and plenty of interactive games to enjoy as we countdown to kickoff. For more details, please call the Frog Club at (817) 257-7700.
SRO TICKETS AVAILABLE
Saturday's home football game versus Texas is a sellout. However, we do have a limited number of standing-room only tickets available at $55. WI-FI IN AMON G. CARTER STADIUM
To enhance the game-day experience for our fans in Amon G. Carter Stadium, we are very proud to announce our new AT&T Wi-Fi service for Saturday's game versus Texas. We've received many compliments through the opening three home games on its ease of connectivity and success. If you're an AT&T subscriber, you should connect immediately. If you have another provider, you will have to connect to the Wi-Fi once you have turned on your service. With the reliance we now have on our mobile devices, we understand the need to have you "connected" at all times while supporting our student-athletes in our venues. We hope you enjoy this new service.
KICKOFF TIME ANNOUNCED
In case you missed it, the Big 12 Conference has announced a 2:30 p.m. kickoff for our Nov. 2 home football game with West Virginia. The contest will be televised on ESPNU.
BIG WINS
Through 13 conference games this season, a ranked Big 12 team has lost to an unranked conference opponent on three occasions, the most among the power conferences. Since 2011 with the implementation of round-robin scheduling, the Big 12 has had 15 such games, also the most among peer conferences (ACC - 13, Big Ten - 11, Pac-12 - 11, SEC - 2).
ON THE DOCKET
We're expecting another packed house at the Rec Center tonight when our volleyball program hosts Oklahoma in a 6:30 match. Volleyball will then travel to Ames on Saturday to face Iowa State. Great crowds have also been the norm at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. Our next-to-last home contest is Friday night at 7 versus Iowa State. As you know, football hosts Texas on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Rifle is at Murray State on Saturday, while both our men's and women's tennis programs hit the road for tournaments. The men will be in Austin for the UT Fall Invite with the women in New Braunfels for the John Newcombe Women's Pro Challenge. Women's golf begins play Sunday at the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio.
BIG 12 CORNER
Big 12 football is defined by parity. Since 2011, the Big 12 has had 15 games in which an unranked team has beaten a ranked conference opponent, the most among peer conferences. Eleven of 17 conference games this season have been decided by 10 or fewer points, including four by a touchdown or less.
MEET THE STAFF
Many of you undoubtedly know Glenda Clausen in our Frog Club office. While this is her seventh year as our manager for Frog Club membership, Glenda has a longtime association with TCU. During her 18 years on campus, she has worked as an assistant to vice chancellor for university advancement Don Whelan as well as in the Chancellor's office, physics department and College of Education. Glenda coordinates our Frog Club events, serves as executive secretary to the Frog Club Advisory Board and as the office budget manager. A Fort Worth native, Glenda and her husband, Byron, have four kids and five grandchildren with a sixth grandchild on the way.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Walter Soza '97 was our first swimming All-American and Olympian as he represented Nicaragua in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Still involved with swimming as he competes on the Master's level, Walter is also a board member of Swim Across America, a non-profit organization that raises money for cancer research. He is also the creative director of The Behavior Exchange, an Applied Behavior Analysis therapy facility in Plano, dedicated to helping children and their families affected by behavior disorders such as autism. A graphic designer and illustrator, Walter owns a marketing and graphic design firm, Soza Designs. He lives in Dallas with his wife, Tammy Cline-Soza, and soon to be 1-year-old son River. The family also has three dogs: Chief, Charlie and Benjamin.
NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE
Last Week's Answer: Comedic genius Leslie Nielsen, as legendary detective Frank Drebin in Naked Gun, said, "It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girl dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day."
This Week's Quote: "It's Wayne Newton! Can I be your bodyguard? I'd die for ya."
COMPLIANCE CORNER
Break Point is a tennis student-athlete at Ocean State University. Break's birthday is today, so the coaches would like to have cake and ice cream for Break and her teammates.
Is this permissible?
Yes. NCAA Bylaw 16.11.1.6 states that an institution may provide student-athletes with reasonable refreshments (e.g., soft drinks, snacks) for student-athlete educational and business meetings and, on an occasional basis, for celebratory events (e.g., birthdays). [R] (Adopted: 10/28/99)
