FORT WORTH, Texas - With the opening of the 2012 football season right around the corner, GoFrogs.com continues its stroll down memory lane to review the No. 7 game in Amon G. Carter Stadium history.
The top 12 games all-time will be counted down leading up to the Sept. 8 season opener with Grambling State, so fans are encouraged to check back often. Please note that selected games have been looked at significantly over the last couple of months and were chosen by members of the TCU media relations staff.
TCU had scored two touchdowns in the third quarter, but blocked extra-point kicks after both scores led to a 19-6 advantage. Memphis would respond with back-to-back end zone trips of its own. By converting its PATs, the Tigers took a one-point lead, 20-19, with 8:19 left.
Freshman running back Lonta Hobbs, who would finish with a career-best 287 yards on the day, extended the Horned Frogs' hopes with a 4-yard run on a 4th-and-3 at the Memphis 38. Seven plays later, Hobbs pushed his way in from a yard out, his fourth touchdown, with only 38 seconds remaining to conclude the game-winning 18-play, 80-yard drive that exhausted close to eight minutes.
Memphis threatened immediately with a quick first down to reach midfield, but the TCU defense stalled the Tigers to clinch a share of the league title, its second conference crown in three years and a Liberty Bowl appearance versus Mountain West champion Colorado State.
A 17-3 victory over the No. 23 Rams on New Year's Eve helped kickstart Patterson's successful tenure at TCU.
