AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Augusta Sports Council has announced TCU true freshman Ethan Perry as a candidate for the 2012 Ray Guy Award, presented to the nation's top punter.
Perry's 47.0 average is on pace to break the TCU single-season record of 46.1 by Chris Becker in 1986. Perry's 47.0 mark is second in the Big 12 and would rank fifth nationally if he had enough attempts to qualify for listing. An average of 3.6 punts per game is required. Perry is at 3.5.
Seven of Perry's 21 punts have been placed inside the opponent 20-yard line. Nine punts have gone at least 50 yards.
Perry, a Spring Branch, Texas, native, has had a punt of at least 63 yards in two of the last four games. He had a 64-yard boot in the rain at SMU and a 63-yard effort versus Iowa State.
