FORT WORTH - TCU's women's volleyball team fell in a three-set decision (25-20, 25-18, 25-19) to No. 14 Kansas State on Saturday afternoon in front of 1,085 fans inside the TCU University Recreation Center.
The Horned Frogs fell to 13-6 and 2-4 in Big 12 action. The visiting Wildcats improved to 17-2 and 4-2 in the league.
The match's first set was defined by runs as K-State rushed out to a 5-2 lead on three kills, a block and a TCU service error. The Frogs were able to chip away at the lead and used a 6-0 run of their own to get within 10-12 before a Wildcat timeout.
Out of the timeout, TCU came out firing on all cylinders, scoring seven of the next 11 points to take a 17-16 lead. After another Wildcat timeout, KSU strung together a 7-0 run for a 24-19 lead and closed out a 25-20 set one win. Mattie Burleson, Sloane Sunstrum and Sutton Sunstrum had four kills each in the set for TCU.
TCU and K-State exchanged points to open the first set before the Wildcats were able to use 5-0 run to take a 13-10 lead after back-to-back kills. The Frogs were able to get within two on three occasions, but a 4-0 Wildcat run put the set out of reach as KSU took a 2-0 lead with a 25-18 win.
Sloane Sunstrum had four kills in the second set, while Sutton Sunstrum added three more to set a career high of seven after just two sets. Meghan Horio had four digs for the Frogs and Megan Munce added 10 assists on 12 TCU kills.
The Frogs took an early 6-3 lead in the third set as Yvonne Igodan had a kill and joined with Munce and Sutton Sunstrum for two blocks. The 14th-ranked Wildcats were able to answer with a 4-0 run to take a 7-6 lead.
KSU extended its lead to three at 16-13 and the Frogs were never able to get closer than that as K-State won the final set 25-19 and the match 3-0. Igodan have five kills in the final set for the Frogs and added two blocks.
Overall, Sloane Sunstrum led the Frogs with 10 kills and three blocks, while Burleson chipped in nine kills and three blocks. Sutton Sunstrum set a career high with seven kills and tied Horio for the team lead with eight digs.
The Frogs return to action Oct. 17 when they travel to Baylor. First serve is set for 7 p.m., in Waco, Texas.
