VERONA, N.Y.--TCU freshman Julien Brun finished off a successful opening weekend for the TCU men's golf team Monday, posting a two-stroke victory at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate at Turning Stone Resort. Brun and junior teammate Daniel Jennevret, who finished runner-up, led the Horned Frogs to a second-place team finish.
TCU concluded the two-day tournament with an even-par total of 864, two shots ahead of third-place Missouri and Purdue (866). Baylor, which posted an 11-under score of 853, earned the team title. The Frogs climbed up from Sunday's fifth-place showing by combining for a 4-over 292 on a cold and rainy day at Turning Stone's Kaluhyat Course.
Brun took top medalist honors in his first career collegiate event with a 1-under-par 71 Monday to push his three-round total to -8. He shot rounds of 70 and 67 Sunday. Brun recorded the 24th individual tournament championship by a Frog since 24th-year head coach Bill Montigel took the reigns of the program prior to the 1987-88 season. Former Frog Tom Hoge, now in the professional ranks, was the last TCU winner at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate this past spring in Austin.
Jennevret also finished off a solid opening weekend with his third straight round featuring a 2-under par score of 70. The result marked the second-best finish of the Sweden native's career. Jennevret won The Prestige at PGA West tournament as a freshman in 2009.
Rounding out the TCU scoring were junior Pontus Gad in 24th place (+7) and senior Johan de Beer in a tie for 25th (+8). Both Frogs carded 4-over-par scores 76 in the final round. Sophomore Ian Phillips, competing in his first varsity tournament as a Frog, tied for 55th place (+19) following a Sunday 75.
TCU continues its fall season Sept. 16-17 at The McLaughlin tournament in Farmington, N.Y.
