VERONA, N.Y.--Newcomer Julien Brun led the TCU men's golf team in his first competition as a Horned Frog Sunday at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate at Turning Stone Resort. Brun claimed a share of the lead following Round 2 to help put the Frogs in fifth place entering the final round of their season-opening tournament.
Sunday's action featured the first two rounds of play on the 7,105-yard, par-72 Kaluhyat Course at Turning Stone. Play will conclude with the final 18 holes Monday.
Brun sits in a tie atop the individual leaderboard with Baylor's Kyle Jones at -7 following respective opening rounds of 70 and 67. The freshman from Antibes, France, helped TCU post a two-round score of -4, nine shots off the pace set by Baylor (-13). Purdue (-10), Missouri (-9) and Bowling Green (-5) sit between the Bears and Frogs on the leaderboard.
Brun's early success should come as no surprise, as he brings impressive international amateur credentials to TCU from his native France. He currently ranks as high as No. 26 in the world amateur golf rankings and is tops among all French amateurs.
Joining Brun near the top of the leaderboard is junior Daniel Jennevret, who owns sole possession of seventh place at -4. He posted identical 2-under-par rounds of 70 to enter the final round only three shots behind the leaders. Jennevret will be looking for a second career tournament victory to go with the one he won as a freshman in 2009 at The Prestige at PGA West
Junior Pontus Gad, who is tied for 28th place at +3 (71-76), was the third Frog finisher Sunday. Senior Johan de Beer is one shot behind in a tie for 31st at +4 (70-78), while sophomore Ian Phillips, seeing his first varsity action as a Frog, is tied for 65th place at +6 (78-82).
Competition from Turning Stone concludes Monday. A shotgun start will get action underway at 6:30 a.m. CT.
