FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's rifle team will kick off their season Saturday at the TCU Rifle Range when they host UTEP. TCU is riding a 20-match regular season winning streak dating back to the 2009-10 campaign.
Scouting TCU
The TCU rifle team is loaded with experience heading into the 2011-12 season as all five shooters who were part of the team that finished third at the 2010-11 NCAA Championships return.
Leading the pack are juniors Sarah Beard and Sarah Scherer, who each had outstanding off-seasons shooting at the national and international level. Senior Mattie Brogdon has been a key contributor all three seasons she has been on campus, while Caitlin Morrissey is part of the ultra-talented junior class. Catherine Green earned valuable experience last season, which should help her raise her game to another level. Pushing for time on the firing line will be sophomore Jaime Dowd and freshman Claudia Duksa.
The squad is guided by the 2011 CRCA Coach of the Year, Karen Monez who enters her eighth season at the helm of the program. She has brought nothing but success to TCU as she has guided the team to a top-five national ranking in each of the previous five seasons, including the 2010 National Championship.
Scouting UTEP
UTEP already has a competition under its belts entering Saturday's match. The Miners took second place in a triangular match that featured Nevada and Columbus State. UTEP fired an aggregate score of 4,600 (2277 in smallbore and 2323 in air rifle). Alix Moncada was the top shooter for the Miners, tying for first place in smallbore with a score of 577. The Miners are a young team with seven underclassmen and only four upperclassmen. Andrea Palafox and Moncada are the veterans with three years of collegiate experience under their belts. Hannah Muegge, Korina Rodriguez and Andrea Vautrin are names to watch in Saturday's match.
