COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—TCU freshman Julien Brun was named Mountain West Co-Men's Golfer of the Month for September, the conference office announced Friday. He shared the award with UNLV junior Kevin Penner.
Brun led TCU to runner-up finishes in his first two collegiate golf tournaments during the month of September. He captured the individual title in his first career event at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate in Verona, N.Y., Sept. 4-5. Brun posted an 8-under-par 208 (70-67-71) on the par 72, 6,724-yard course and won the tournament by two strokes over junior teammate Daniel Jennervret. Brun, a native of Antibes, France, became the first freshman in head coach Bill Montigel's tenure to win the opening tournament of his career.
In his second event of the month, Brun tied for third with senior teammate Johan de Beer at The McLaughlin in Farmington, N.Y. He carded a 4-under 206(69-67-70) on the par-70, 6,734-yard Bethpage Red Course and has now shot par or better in each of his six rounds to start the season.
Penner led UNLV to the team title in the season-opening Gene MirandaFalcon Invitational in Colorado Springs on Sept, 18-19. He finished the 54-hole tournament tied for first after firing a 7-under 209 (74-67-68) on the par 72, 7,370-yard Eisenhower-Blue Course on the campus of the United States Air Force Academy. The Rebels won the team title on the first playoff hole against Colorado with a score of 2-under after setting a tournament record with a 54-hole score of 20-under.
TCU returns to competition Oct. 10-11 at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational held at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.
