ULM vs. No. 23 TCU
Sept. 17, 2011
Attendance: 32,719
Final: No. 23 TCU 38, ULM 17
TCU HEAD COACH Gary Patterson
Opening Statement
"Well the seniors got their 38th win and that's pretty cool. The first quarter on defense was terrible. The first quarter of offense wasterrible. We scored one offensive touchdown in the second half and we gave up 17 points in the first quarter. We've got to learn how to play four quarters. Without a doubt, we knew going into it that we weren't going to play Kenny Cain, Tanner Brock or Ed Wesley and we had to get through it. We tried to find a way to win and we did. We played a lot of young players."
On Greg McCoy's 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half:
"It gave us some breathing room. That was the second return of his career. That was a bright spot, because besides the kickoff return, we didn't play very well at all on special teams."
On TCU biggest adjustment on defense in the second half:
"We played with more confidence. We had the long kickoff return and all of a sudden, our guys thought that we could do this. We have to believing in ourselves. There is a defense when we have had older teams on defense. There are a lot of similarities between this team and 2004. We have got to learn how to turn the knob up from the very first play. Whatever they do new, don't care. You have your rules, go play and go challenge them. Go make them be what they want to be. That's what we have always done here and we need to get back to it. We did that in the second half."
On what TCU learned from the win:
"We got to have more emotion to win ball games. If I was going to pick a game that we weren't going to play emotionally and that we were going to have to fight back, this is as good as any of them, because we found a way to win. If this would have been San Diego State or SMU, we wouldn't have won the ball game. We learned a lesson today and we came out on top. We won the ball game and that is the positive of it."
On playing at home in the newly-constructed Amon G. Carter Stadium:
"It was good to play at home. We've had to take our own energy in each of the last two weeks and it's hard to do that. We are excited about where we are at 2-1. I'm excited for my 100th win for the simple reason that I have had my job for a while. Hopefully I will keep it until next week. I thought the stadium looked nice. We need to be louder, but it looked like everyone enjoyed where they were sitting and what they were doing."
On the weather conditions:
"I thought the humidity for both teams was really heavy. With all of the rain that we have had, it was probably way heavier than what either of our teams practiced in all week. I think both teams pushed through it."
TCU SENIOR CORNERBACK Greg McCoy
On his kickoff return for touchdown:
"Right before we came out, coach was talking about playing with emotion and one play can be the difference in the game. When I came out I knew I had to try to make an impact and bring some emotion to the team. We all talked about it. Everybody said I'm gonna do my job and all you have to do is just run and that's all I had to do. I think special teams did a great job.
"Waymon James and Greg Birks had two great blocks. Waymon James, his block is the one that really set me free. Once I saw the green grass I took it and ran."
On mood in locker room at halftime:
"Emotion was the big thing we talked about in the locker room. The thing was we wanted to go out and just play the game but have fun doing it. Making sure we have fun while we're doing our job. Once we walked out of the locker room, we knew exactly what we had to do."
On talking to his young teammates on defense when they make a mistake:
"Encouragement. You tell them that tyou'll get it next time and you give them pointers on what you saw them do wrong. Being a corner I've done a lot wrong too and it's just what happens at that position. Basically all you have to do is encourage them because corner is all about confidence."
TCU SOPHOMORE QUARTERBACK Casey Pachall
On Greg McCoy's kickoff return for TD:
"That was big. It gave us a lot of momentum. Our mentality coming out at halftime was gonna be the same thing, start strong. So either way we were gonna come out and fight the entire time and try to get the momentum going again."
On if he ever felt confused by the ULM defense:
"Not really. There were maybe one or two plays where they did some stuff we didn't expect but other than that we were pretty well game planned and we knew everything that was gonna go on."
On his performance:
"I felt like I did pretty good. There were a few times I made some mental mistakes that caused some physical mistakes on the field which everybody saw. I am more upset with myself on those mental lapses on a few reads and a few checks that I made."
On his fumble at the end of the first half"
"I don't feel like that's anybody's fault because right towards the end of the half we called a play trying to get everybody down field and I was about to throw it. So the o-line did what they had to do and it's tough for them to block for that long so we don't really blame anybody for that."
ULM HEAD COACH TODD BERRY
Opening statement:
"TCU is a very good program. I've got so much respect for Coach Patterson and what he does. Gary and I have known each other for a long time. We've played against each other. I love playing against him, and I hate playing against him. He's always going to test you more than anybody else from a schematic standpoint. I love watching his guys, too, because they're going to play hard and play the game the way it's supposed to be played. My hat's off to them in terms of what he's done with the program with how hard and physical they play."
On his team's performance:
"I really do think we have a decent football team. Our defense didn't show up like it had the first couple games, but I've been waiting for our offense to do this. We've really hurt each other in the first two games offensively; maybe we were trying too hard to make a play. This is really a pleasing group. They want to please their fan base, their coaches and at times I think we try too hard. Today, I just told them to relax and go out and play the game. We didn't really change much, we did some things that were different that we thought might give them some problems in terms of adjustment."
On the passing game:
"We knew we were going to have to get the ball out of our hand. [Patterson] does a great job with the defense, I've seen it for so long so I know a little about it. He's seen our offense too because it's the nature of kind of what they do. We just couldn't score enough points to win. Obviously the defense has to get themselves off the field and stop somebody on third down, which we didn't do at all today. I thought the two pivotal plays of the game were the kick-off return for the touchdown and the fumble. You take those fourteen points away and we're back to where we were at halftime."
