FORT WORTH, Texas - Fresh off a successful summer of competition, TCU rifle junior Sarah Beard has been named to the 2011 Pan American Team. Beard is the lone collegiate athlete named to the roster. The Pan American games will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico Oct. 14-23.
Beard was named to the squad based on winning the women's open position championships at nationals in July at Fort Benning, Ga. She is part of an eight-member team that will compete in the rifle competition. In all, USA Shooting will send 22 athletes to the Pan American Games.
The event features competition between athletes from the nations of the Americas. The Pan Am Games are held once every four years in the year prior to the Summer Olympic Games. They also hold importance because it is the last opportunity for countries to win 2012 Olympic participation quotas. USA Shooting is sending a team of talented rifle, pistol and shotgun athletes to participate on behalf of the red, white and blue. Athletes that finished with a gold medal at the recent USAS National Championships earned a spot on the team. The remaining athletes were chosen by a Pan Am Selection Committee.
