NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Walter Camp Football Foundation has named TCU linebacker Tank Carder as one of 40 "Players to Watch" for its 2011 Player of the Year award.
Carder, a first-team All-American and the Rose Bowl's Defensive Most Valuable Player last season, is one of just 10 defensive players on the list.
The Walter Camp Player of the Year award is the nation's fourth-oldest individual college football accolade. The Walter Camp Football Foundation also administers the nation's oldest All-America team.
Former TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes and quarterback Andy Dalton were one of 15 finalists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year award in the 2009 and 2010 seasons, respectively.
Carder, a consensus preseason All-American, has also been named to watch lists for the Rotary Lombardi Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Chuck Bednarik Award, Dick Butkus Award and Lott Trophy.
A senior from Sweeny, Texas, Carder posted 60 tackles last season, including 9 1/2 for loss. He totaled 3 1/2 sacks, five pass breakups and an interception.
In the 21-19 Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin, Carder broke up the Badgers' potential game-tying 2-point pass with exactly two minutes to play. He totaled six tackles in the contest, including three for loss with a sack.
After TCU took a 21-13 lead on its opening possession of the second half, Wisconsin drove to the Horned Frogs' 37 on its ensuring series. On a third-and-6, Carder recorded a sack for an 8-yard loss.
Carder's 158 career tackles are tops among active Horned Frogs.
