FORT WORTH, Texas - Fort Worth native Whitney Williams played two seasons at Iowa State, each ending in deep Cyclone NCAA Tournament runs, but transferred to TCU following her sophomore season.
Forced to sit out last season due to NCAA transfer rules, Williams will play the upcoming campaign as a junior and is excited to get back on the court.
"It was definitely tough sitting out a year," said Williams. "Having played basketball year-round since I started playing, it was an adjustment not getting to play. I can't wait to put on a jersey again."
The 5-foot-7 guard, averaged 20.1 minutes per game with totals of 5.9 points, 1.0 rebound and 1.6 assists per contest in 2009-10 for ISU. She shot 40.1 percent overall from the field and ranked fourth in the Big 12 Conference in 3-point percentage with a rate of 40.0 percent. Williams also shot 87.0 percent from the free-throw line as a sophomore.
Known by many as a talented sharp shooter from deep, Williams will bring plenty of firepower and experience onto the court this upcoming season and hopes to help fill the scoring void left by departing first team all-conference honorees Emily Carter and Helena Sverrisdottir.
"The team has changed quite a bit this summer, as does every team when losing four seniors, but I think everyone on this team is willing to do what needs to be done to have a great season," said Williams.
Williams, who scored over 3,500 points and was a four-time All-American for the THESA Riders of the Texas Home Educators Sports Association, will continue working hard throughout the summer as she and her teammates look to bring home to Fort Worth one final Mountain West Conference crown before heading into the BIG EAST Conference.
"We definitely want TCU to leave the Mountain West as champions of the conference and that's my main goal for us. We have known that this summer was going to be a tough and a challenging one for us," said Williams, who tries to pattern her game after NBA All-Star Steve Nash. "We go about it one day at a time and I believe that we have all stepped up to really encourage each other."
So as the summer months slowly come to an end and the 2011-12 version of the TCU women's basketball program continues to push each other, Williams looks forward to the day when she will finally be able to step onto the court and don a Purple and White No. 2 jersey for the first time.
