FORT WORTH, Texas - For the second time this year, TCU rifle sophomore Sarah Scherer has been honored as USA Shooting's ELEY Athlete of the Month. Additionally, Sarah Beard has earned a spot on the team competing in both the World Cup USA and World Cup Munich.
Scherer's honor comes on the heels of her outstanding performance in South Korea where she took gold in the Women's 10m Air Rifle competition. The gold medal earned a 2012 Olympic quota spot in Women's 10m Air Rifle for the USA. Scherer also competed at the National Junior Olympic Championships in Colorado Springs where she finished with two silver medals in Women's 10m Air Rifle and Women's 50m Rifle Three Position.
National Rifle Coach Major Dave Johnson praised Scherer's performance as he said, "She came in on a mission to get something done in Women's 10m Air Rifle in Korea. She took her experience from last year's World Championship silver medal, and great training through the school year at TCU to perform at a world class level for her first ISSF World Cup gold medal."
Beard had an outstanding showing at the Spring Selection Match held in Fort Benning, Georgia. She finished second in the smallbore event with a final three day score of 1,943.4. On day one, she led all shooters with a score of 586 and shot a 97.6 in the final. She fired a 582 on day two and a 95.5 in the finals. On the final day, the sophomore fired a 577 and a 100.8 in the finals.
With her second place finish in the women's 3x20 50-meter smallbore event, Beard earned a spot on the team competing in both the World Cup USA and World Cup Munich. She will join Scherer on the squad that will compete at the World Cup USA next week in Fort Benning, Ga. and at the World Cup Munich, which will be held in June.
