TUCSON, Ariz.--TCU will enter the final round of the Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship in third place and only six strokes off the pace following another strong team performance Friday at OMNI Tucson National Resort.
The Horned Frogs combined to card a 2-under-par score of 282 during Round 2 to push their cumulative tournament score to -3. San Diego State leads the field at -9 following a 3-under 281 Friday, but UNLV proved to be the big mover of the day, shooting -11 to finish the round only one shot behind the Aztecs.
TCU's five players continued their consistent play from the opening round, as each Frog among the field will enter the final day within eight strokes of the individual leaders. SDSU's Johan Carlsson, UNLV's Derek Ernst and Wyoming's Gabe Maier lead the pack at -7 for the tournament. TCU is the only squad with each of its five players positioned at +1 or better.
Junior Johan de Beer continued to pace the Frogs, finishing the Round 2 tied for sixth place overall at -3. The South Africa native fired a 2-under 69 and is -7 dating back to the start of the back nine of Thursday's opening round. He carded four birdies Friday.
Senior Tom Hoge shot even par for the second straight day following a 71 on Thursday and is tied for 12th place. Three other Frogs find themselves among a four-way tie for 16th place at +1 in junior Eli Cole and sophomores Pontus Gad and Daniel Jennevret. Jennevret carded a 70 for TCU's second-best individual round of the day, while Cole and Gad both shot 72.
The MWC Championship concludes Saturday at OMNI Tucson National Resort with the first group scheduled to tee off at 7 a.m. PT. Live coverage is available throughout the tournament at Golfstat.com.
