ERIE, Colo.—The TCU men's golf team will enter the final round of the NCAA Colorado Regional holding down the all-important fifth-place position following a strong second round of play Friday at Colorado National Golf Club.
The top-5 teams in the tournament's final standings earn a spot at the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 31 through June 5 in Stillwater, Okla. The top individual finisher not on one of the advancing teams will also qualify for the national tournament.
The Horned Frogs climbed up one spot into fifth place following a strong 6-under-par 282, which was the fourth-best total of the day. TCU trails fourth-place Clemson (-6) by one stroke and is only four shots behind second-place Auburn (-9). Top-ranked Oklahoma State (-25) owns a 16-stroke lead on the field.
The day started with seven teams and 33 golfers finishing the first round, which was suspended Thursday due to lightning in the vicinity and standing water on several greens and elsewhere on the course.
The weather improved from Thursday's conditions, which included rain, temperatures between 38 and 44 degrees and 11-15 miles per hour winds that had the wind chill as low as 31. Friday's temperature reached 60 degrees and the wind occasionally topped 10 mph. The skies held off from opening up until 3:30 p.m. MT, when the horn was again blown for lightning in the area. A storm moved through and play resumed shortly after 5 p.m.
Sophomore Pontus Gad, who is the top Frog on the individual leaderboard in a tie for ninth place, put together his second consecutive strong round featuring a 4-under 68 and is now -4 for the tournament. He was one of only 13 players in the field to shoot sub-70 following a round featuring six birdies. Gad was 4-under on the course's back nine.
Junior Eli Cole also continued his solid play, shooting a 1-under 71. He is now -1 for the tournament and in a tie for 22nd place after shooting par-72 during Thursday's opening round.
Sophomore Daniel Jennevret, who was +5 entering Friday, gave the Frogs a big boost with a 2-under 70 that elevated him into a tie for 46th place (+3). Jennevret bogeyed hole No. 1 before finishing 3-under during the final 17 holes, including an eagle on hole No. 7.
Senior Tom Hoge and junior Johan de Beer rounded out the TCU scoring, as both equaled their Round 1 scores of 1-over 73. The two Frogs are currently among a group of seven players tied for 39th at +2.
The NCAA Colorado Regional concludes Saturday with the final 18 holes of competition. First groups are scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m. MT.
