FORT COLLINS, Colo. — TCU continues competition at the 2011 Mountain West Conference Championships Friday, when it squares off against No. 3 seed New Mexico in semifinal-round action at 3 p.m. CT at Colorado State's University Tennis Complex.
The winner between the Horned Frogs and Lobos will play against the winner of the BYU-San Diego State semifinal in Saturday's championship match at 3 p.m. CT. The tournament champion will receive the MWC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, which begin May 13.
TCU, the No. 2 seed, defeated No. 7 Air Force, 4-0, Thursday to advance to the conference semifinals for the sixth straight season—each year since the squad joined the MWC. New Mexico cruised past Utah by the score of 4-0 to reach Friday's semifinals matchup against the Frogs.
The Frogs, currently ranked No. 57 in the ITA national team rankings, looks to dismiss the Lobos for the second time this month after posting a 5-2 victory in the teams' April 8 meeting at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center to run their advantage in the all-time series to 17-3.
Since joining the Mountain West Conference in 2005-06, the Frogs have accumulated a 36-10 record against league opponents, garnered three tournament titles ('06, '08, '10) and at least a share of two regular-season crowns ('08, '09).
UNM enters Friday's match with a 15-9 overall record this spring, sporting a 4-2 ledger against the MWC. The Cougars boast four players who were named all-conference earlier this week. Ben Dunbar and Jadon Phillips both appeared on the All-MWC Singles team, while Dunbar was joined by partner Conor Berg and Phillips teamed up with Phil Anderson on the All-MWC Doubles squad. Dunbar has played No. 1 singles for most of the spring, compiling an 11-7 record, while Berg paces the squad with 15 wins overall.
