FORT WORTH—The TCU men's golf team returns to the links this weekend in Annapolis, Md., as it prepares for postseason play at the Navy Spring Invitational. The tournament runs Saturday through Sunday at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course.
This weekend's competition wraps up regular-season play for the Horned Frogs. Next up for the squad is the Mountain West Conference Championships, which will be played May 5-7 in Tucson, Ariz.
TCU will be making its first-ever appearance at the Navy Spring Invitational, which consists of two 18-hole rounds at the 6,671-yard, par-71 U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course. The tournament, in its 32nd year, will feature 18 teams in addition to TCU, including: Bucknell, Colgate, Columbia, Drexel, George Washington, Iona, Lafayette, La Salle, Lehigh, Loyola, Mount St. Mary's, Navy (three teams), Rhode Island, Siena, St. Bonaventure and St. Francis (Pa.).
TCU will field a five-person team lineup, with the top-four finishers each day counting toward the team score. Hitting the course for the Frogs will be senior Tom Hoge, junior Johan de Beer, sophomore Pontus Gad, junior Eli Cole and sophomore Daniel Jennevret. Senior Scott Roudebush will also make the trip and play as an individual competitor.
The Frogs enter this weekend's tournament playing their best golf of the season, having recorded three consecutive top-5 finishes. The squad finished fourth in its latest outing April 4 through 5 in a tough field at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas, and appears on track to earn its 22nd straight NCAA Regional bid next month. TCU is one of only four NCAA teams to advance to regionals each of the last 21 years under the same coach, as Frog head man Bill Montigel has taken his squad to the postseason each spring since 1990.
TCU's recent hot streak has seen the team climb into 40th place in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin national rankings. Leading the Frogs in the individual ratings are de Beer at No. 99 and Hoge at No. 110.
Leading the way for the Frogs recently has been Hoge, who has finished sixth place or better in each of the team's last three tournaments, including taking top medalist honors in Austin. Hoge owns a stroke average of 70.5 during the recent stretch and has shot below 70 in four of his last nine rounds. Also playing solid golf has been de Beer, who owns three sub-70 rounds to go with a 72.0 stroke average during the three tournaments.
Live results for the Navy Spring Invitational will not be available, although results will be available following the conclusion of each day's action at GoFrogs.com.
