FORT WORTH -- The TCU women's tennis team looks to get back in the win column this weekend when it travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face Colorado State, Wyoming and Air Force for the final weekend of Mountain West Conference action. Those matches will run Friday through Sunday, respectively, and are all set for 11 a.m., CT.
TCU has dropped its last three matches, all while playing without the services of sophomore Federica Denti, who has played most of season at the No. 2 singles spot. Overall, the Horned Frogs are 7-10, including a 2-3 mark against MWC foes.
Senior Katariina Tuohimaa and sophomore Olivia Smith both boast 4-1 singles records against MWC competition this spring. Tuohimaa has played all five of her matches at the No. 1 spot, while Smith has played at Nos. 3 and 4.
In doubles, Denti and Tuohimaa make up TCU's No. 1 tandem and have amassed a 9-6 record this spring and a 14-8 record overall as doubles partners. Last week, playing without Denti against San Diego State, the Frogs mixed up their doubles combinations and swept all three matches, including two against ranked opponents.
The Rams enter Friday's match with a record of 8-9 and 0-4 in the MWC. Caitlin Fluegge is CSU's No. 1 singles record and has a 5-10 mark this spring. In doubles, Fluegge and Veronika Wojakowska have a 3-6 record from the No. 1 spot.
Wyoming has an overall record of 10-7 this spring, including an 0-4 mark in the league. Veronica Popovici has an 11-5 mark during the spring at No. 1 singles, including a 2-2 record against league opponents. Simona Synkova and Kim Van Ginkel are 2-2 in the MWC at No. 1 doubles.
The Falcons are 14-8, 0-4. Christen Monreal is 7-11 this spring at No. 1 singles for Air Force, while Melissa Cecil and Tahlia Smoke are 14-7 at No. 1 doubles. Monreal, along with the Academy doubles duo are 0-4 against MWC competition.
The Frogs hold a 7-0 mark in the all-time ledger against CSU. In the history that dates back to 1999, the Rams have picked up only one point against TCU. Since joining the MWC in 2006, TCU has five 7-0 wins and a 4-0 win at the MWC Championships against CSU, a 7-0 triumph a year ago.
TCU has never dropped a match to the Cowgirls, holding a 10-0 mark all-time. Until a year ago, Wyoming had scored only two points in the series before TCU won a pair of thrilling 4-3 matches in 2010. On April 29 of last year, TCU stunned Wyoming 4-3 to advance to the MWC title match.
The Frogs and Falcons have squared off five times, all as members of the MWC and with TCU claiming wins in all five matches. Air Force has scored three points all-time against TCU, including one in TCU's 6-1 victory a year ago.
