FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU's Sarah Scherer won a key gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle at the 2011 ISSF World Cup in Changwon, Korea this past weekend. Her efforts in the event have given the United States team their first quota in an effort to earn a spot to compete in the 2012 Olympics.Scherer earned a spot in the 10-shot finals after shooting a 398 to tie for first with Poland's Agnieszka Nagay. She took the lead after the second final shot and held on to that lead for the remaining eight shots. Her final score of 501.5 topped Nagay by one full point.
"It feels great to win a Quota Place for my country. I will have to go through national trials to make the Olympic team, now." said Scherer. "It has been my first time in a final, and it was a bit intimidating to shoot shoulder and shoulder with these experienced athletes. But I have been training hard to get here, so I was quite confident."
The event was even more impressive for the sophomore as her score of 398 in the qualifier was her highest score fired in a World Cup event and her first time to qualify for the final round.
Heading to the Changwon World Cup the US had yet to win a 2012 Olympic Quota in the Women's Air Rifle event. Scherer's finish gives the US their first quota in this event for 2012 Olympics. The quota is solely for the US team as individuals will still have to qualify for the team in the US Olympic Tryouts.
