FORT WORTH, Texas - Three TCU women's basketball players were among those who earned All-Mountain West Conference honors, the league office announced Monday. Senior's Helena Sverrisdottir and Emily Carter appeared on the All-MWC First Team, while sophomore forward Starr Crawford earned second team accolades.
Sverrisdottir, who is now a three-time first team all-conference performer, averaged 13.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.5 steals in conference play. The Iceland native, who shot 43.8 percent from the field and scored in double-figures in 10 of the 16 conference games, led the Horned Frogs in scoring five times, which included three games over 20 points. She recently earned MWC Player of the Week honors after scoring 23 and 24 points against Utah and New Mexico, respectively. Overall, the senior closed the conference season ranked in the top-10 in nine different categories, including No. 8 in scoring, No. 4 in assists and No. 3 in steals.
Carter had an outstanding conference season, wrapping up play third in scoring with 16.3 points per game and fourth in free throw percentage, shooting over 85 percent. Carter, who scored 20 or more points in five league games and hit at least one shot from beyond the arc in 13 contests, also led the Horned Frogs in scoring five times during conference play. Overall, the Louisiana native, who is a repeat selection to the all-conference first team, scored in double-figures in 13 of the 16 conference games, including seven-straight to close the season.
Crawford collected second team accolades as well as all-defensive team honors after being one of only two players in the conference to record at least five double-doubles during conference play. The sophomore had seven double-digit rebounding games and 12 double-digit scoring games in the MWC, which included an 18-point and 18-board outing against UNLV that helped garner her MWC Player of the Week accolades. Crawford was the only Mountain West Conference player to average double-digits in points per game (12.7) and double-digits in boards per contest (10.0) during MWC play. She closed the conference season, leading the conference in rebounds (10.0) and offensive rebounds (3.7), while also ranking No. 2 in steals (2.3) and defensive rebounds (6.4).
TCU will next be in action at the 2011 CONOCO Mountain West Conference Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. The Horned Frogs will open up tournament action on Friday, March 11 at the Thomas and Mack Center at 2:30 p.m. PT.
