GOODYEAR, Ariz.—The TCU men's golf team continued its strong play at the Desert Shootout Friday at Palm Valley Golf Course, maintaining its second-place standing. Senior Tom Hoge matched the event's low round for the weekend with a 65 to lead the Frogs.
TCU, which combined for an 11-under par score of 277 during Round 2, currently trails team leader Oklahoma (-32) by nine strokes at -23 for the tournament. Iowa State is three shots back of the Frogs in third place (-20).
Hoge's 7-under par round moved him into a tie for third place overall, three stokes behind co-leaders Abraham Ancer (Oklahoma) and Zachary Blair (BYU). He entered the day tied for 23rd place. Friday's round marked the second-best of his Frog career, trailing only the 64 he recorded during the second round of last season's Western Refining Collegiate All-American Classic.
Three other Frogs joined Hoge in red figures Friday. Junior Johan de Beer and sophomore Daniel Jennevret continued to play consistent golf, as the pair is among a group of five players six strokes back in 10th place. Both de Beer and Jenevret fired 2-under par scores of 70 to follow up identical Thursday opening rounds of 68. Junior Eli Cole, who is competing as an individual only this weekend, also fired a 70 to work his way into a share of 31st place, 10 shots back of the co-leaders at -2.
Senior Scott Roudebush, who finds himself tied for 61st palce, wrapped up TCU's team scoring with an even-par 72 to remain at +3 for the tournament. Sophomore Pontus Gad, 2-under par entering the round, struggled Friday while shooting a 78 and is now +4 on the weekend.
Competition at Palm Valley Golf Course concludes Saturday with the tournament's final round.
