FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - J.J. McDermott threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Johnson in overtime and SMU recovered from a fourth-quarter collapse for a 40-33 upset of No. 20 TCU on Saturday.

The loss ended a school-record 22-game home winning streak for the Horned Frogs (3-2).

"What a win. It's been a long, long time coming," McDermott said. "We were up. They stormed back. I'm ecstatic, so proud of our guys."

SMU (4-1) coughed up a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter before McDermott hit Johnson on a deep out route in the end zone for his fourth scoring toss of the game.

TCU's bid to tie ended when a tipped pass from Casey Pachall bounced off the chest of Brandon Carter just past the first-down marker.

SMU went ahead 33-17 on a 21-yard scoring catch by Darius Johnson, who had 12 catches for 152 yards and two scores.

The Horned Frogs pulled within 10 on Pachall's 11-yard touchdown pass to Carter and got within seven on a field goal with less than 7 minutes remaining.

After SMU's Kenneth Hacker hesitated a yard deep in the end zone and was tackled at the 10 on the subsequent kickoff, TCU got the ball back and drove 46 yards to the tying score, a 4-yard pass from Pachall to Luke Shivers, Pachall's third TD of the second half.

"The bottom line is we've come back twice and come up short," TCU coach Gary Patterson said. "Our kids did everything the could to get to that point, but you've got to find a way to finish."

Both of SMU's post-death penalty wins over ranked teams have come against TCU. The other was in 2005, a week after TCU entered the rankings with an upset of Oklahoma. SMU is off to its best start since going 5-1 in 1986, the year before the program was shut down.

"It's a step in the right direction," SMU coach June Jones said. "Every time this happens, it's another barrier to get through."

SMU's Zach Line entered the game second nationally with 11 touchdowns, but the biggest play from the linebacker-turned-running back came on the kickoff coverage team to start the second half. He stripped TCU's Greg McCoy inside the 10, and Chris Parks recovered in the end zone for a 24-10 lead.

The Mustangs rode the momentum swing from that play until TCU's big rally in the fourth quarter. The Horned Frogs outscored the Mustangs 23-6 in the fourth.

The Frogs salvaged three points on the final play of the first half after their initial field goal attempt failed.

TCU was kicking on first down with 8 seconds left when the holder, Anson Kelton, mishandled the snap. He grabbed the ball and scrambled before throwing an incomplete pass. The clock read 0:00 and SMU coaches were yelling at their players to get off the field. Officials ruled that two seconds remained, and on second down, Ross Evans hit a 42-yarder for a 17-10 SMU lead as the clock read zeros once again.

Wesley turned things in TCU's favor in just one play, though. He ran through a huge hole in the middle of the line and skirted through the secondary before he was caught from behind on a 63-yard run to the SMU 3.

Matthew Tucker scored two plays later to cut SMU's lead to 17-7 when things turned chippy between the Dallas-Fort Worth rivals in the annual "Iron Skillet" game.

The Frogs, coming off three straight seasons with the nation's top defense, couldn't stop SMU on third-down. SMU took control early thanks to big pass plays on third down. The Mustangs went up 7-0 on their first drive when Johnson made a great sideways leap in the zone for a 13-yard score on third-and-8. The drive was kept alive by a pass interference penalty that wiped out an interception of McDermott.

Facing third-and-10 on SMU's next possession, McDermott hit Terrance Wilkerson in stride behind the TCU defense for a 71-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
