SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The TCU Horned Frogs gave it all they had, rallying from a 2-1 match deficit to force a decisive fifth set, but fell just short in the 3-2 (11-25, 25-17, 25-27, 25-22, 12-15) loss. Christy Hudson posted the Frogs' fourth triple-double in school history with 11 kills, 19 assists and 13 digs.Irene Hester led all attackers with 20 kills, her second-straight 20-kill effort. Jordan Raines pitched in with a career-high 18 kills and tallied seven digs to go along with two blocks. Kay Lin Connolly racked up 13 digs. Kristen Hester tied for the match lead with five blocks, while Hannah Fort pitched in with four.
San Diego State took an early 4-1 lead and never looked back en route to the dominating 25-11 set one victory. The Horned Frogs struggled to put two points together, doing so only once on back-to-back errors by the Aztecs.
The Frogs turned the tide in the second set, racing out to a 7-2 lead. Raines and Hudson came alive at the net to get the Frogs rolling behind the tough serving of Irene Hester. Each time the Aztecs tried to rally, the Frogs came through with an answer to maintain the lead. Holding on to a 15-10 lead, Raines blasted back-to-back kills to push the led out to seven, 17-10, and forcing an Aztec timeout.
The break did nothing to quell the Horned Frog momentum as they continued to roll. A block by Fort and Kirby halted another run by the Aztecs and a kill from Irene Hester made it a 23-16 contest. An error by Kyley Sexton gave the Frogs a 25-17 set two victory, tying the match at a game apiece.
TCU raced out to the early lead in the third set only to see San Diego State rally for the 27-25 victory and the 2-1 match lead. The Frogs had four set points in the set, but couldn't stave off the Aztec rally.
The Frogs forced a fifth set with a 25-22 victory that tied the match at two. TCU claimed the early 8-5 lead on kills from Hudson, Raines and Irene Hester. San Diego State battled back to briefly take a 19-17 lead, but the Frogs regained the momentum on a service error.
Yvonne Igodan tied the set at 19 and a blast from Irene Hester put the Frogs in front to stay. Hester and Igodan teamed up on a denial in the middle to give the Frogs a two-point lead, 21-19. Two kills from Irene Hester pushed the lead to three and Igodan gave the Frogs set point with her second kill of the set. Raines finished off the victory with a loud kill on the outside.
In the fifth set, the Frogs found themselves in an early hole and could never dig their way out. San Diego State took control early, leading 11-7 before a kill by Igodan got the Frogs rolling. Horio served the Frogs to within one, 11-10, but a blast from Raegan Shelton put the Aztecs back in control and they held on for the 15-12 set five win.
TCU falls to 9-6 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. The Horned Frogs return home for a Thursday night match up against UNLV. First serve for the nationally-televised match is slated for 7 p.m.
