FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU football team is ranked sixth in the Associated Press Top 25 poll released Saturday, marking the highest preseason ranking in history for the Horned Frogs.
TCU's previous best preseason ranking was seventh, accomplished in this year's USA Today Top 25 and the 1956 AP poll.
The Horned Frogs return 16 of 22 starters from last year's 12-1 team which won the Mountain West Conference championship, reached its first BCS game with a trip to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and closed the season ranked sixth.
TCU has three top-10 final rankings in the last five seasons.
It's the sixth time since 2000 that TCU has been ranked in the preseason. Last year's No. 17 preseason ranking was TCU's highest appearance in a preseason poll since 1960, when it was 11th. The previous four occasions saw the Horned Frogs no higher than 20th in a preseason poll.
TCU's 53-11 (.828) record since 2005 ranks as the sixth-best mark in the nation. The Horned Frogs have won at least 10 games six times in the last eight seasons, including five campaigns with at least 11 victories.
TCU opens the 2010 season Sept. 4 versus No. 24 Oregon State at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. The game will be televised on ESPN.
