FORT WORTH, Texas - With preseason practices underway, GoFrogs.com recently caught up with TCU distance coach Shawn Winget.
The Horned Frogs return many key distance runners from a 2009 squad, including Tricia Terry and Agnes Kemboi on the women's side. The Frogs will also welcome back senior Festus Kigen following an All-America campaign during the 2010 track and field season.
What do you expect from both the men's and women's side this fall?
"We really want to continue to improve this fall. On the women's side, we are looking for a top 4 finish at the Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships. With the men, we really want to finish in the top 5 at conference."
How has Festus Kigen progressed during your time here at TCU?
"He has improved drastically during my time at TCU. He started out as a top 10 distance runner in the MWC and now is a title contender this fall. Really, he went from being just an NCAA qualifier to an All-America honoree during the indoor season, which was great. I am really proud of him because he has taken a lot of leadership roles as well within our program. He constantly is encouraging everyone around him, which really helps our team."
What do you expect out of Festus Kigen this season?
"Of course our goals are going to be high going into his senior year. During cross country, I want him to be the Mountain West Conference Champion and an All-America honoree."
How excited are you for this season to start?
"With every new season there is excitement. I am really excited to see who has worked hard over the summer and made big improvements. I also am excited to see our newcomers and how they can add to the mix."
What do you expect out of Agnes Kemboi and Tricia Terry this season?
"They both were very strong last year, but were never able to compete at the same time. Having both in the mix this year will be a huge boost for us. They now have some experience under their belt, so they know what to expect. Agnes finished 16th overall at conference last season and we are looking for both of them to place higher than that this fall."
