ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Four Frogs scored in double figures, and the TCU women's basketball team pulled away in the second half during a 88-74 victory over the University of Fraser Valley Friday night at the Cascades' Envision Athletic Center.
The matchup marked the second exhibition contest of the squad's eight-day summer tour of the Vancouver area. TCU posted a 100-61 victory in Thursday's opener against the Cascades.
Like Thursday's contest, the game featured four 12-minute quarters instead of the typical two 20-minute halves. TCU fell behind early and trailed 20-17 at the end of the first period before regrouping to take a five-point advantage into halftime. The squad outscored UFV 50-41 in the second half despite a 26-point, 13-rebound performance from forward Tessa Klassen. Klassen went 6-for-12 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Senior guard Emily Carter drilled a trio of 3-pointers herself while leading TCU with 17 points. She also made five of 16 TCU steals. Sophomore forward DeLisa Gross totaled 15 points in a team-high 32 minutes of game action, while fellow sophomore guard Hannah Christian, who went 9-of-10 at the free-throw line, notched 13 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Helena Sverrisdottir followed up Thursday's 21-point effort by scoring 11 points.
Junior Antoinette Thompson scored nine points and pulled down eight boards. The 5-7 point guard averaged 10.0 rebounds during the two games against the Cascades.
TCU continued to give its group of freshmen newcomers valuable minutes. Thanks to a recent NCAA rule change, newcomers are now eligible to play during summer foreign trips. In past seasons, incoming players were not allowed to practice or compete prior to the official start of fall classes.
Three Frog freshmen saw the floor Friday. Forward Briesha Wynn scored six points and made four steals. Guard Aron Garcia pulled down seven rebounds while totaling three points and a pair of blocked shots. Guard Meagan Henson recorded two steals.
TCU will spend the next two days in Whistler, B.C., before returning to the court Monday against Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C. Whistler was the home of many of the events during the recent 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
