BRYAN, Texas—TCU, fueled by a brilliant opening round by freshman Daniel Jennevret, concluded the first day of the NCAA South Central Regional Men's Golf Championships in a tie for first place Thursday at the Traditions Golf Club. Five Horned Frogs combined to shoot an 11-under-par 277 to match third-ranked and top-seeded Texas A&M for the day's top round.
The Frogs, seeded fifth, need to finish among the regional's top-5 squads to clinch an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, which will be held June 2-5 in Ooltewah, Tenn.
TCU saw four of its five players shoot below par Thursday, led by Jennevret, who opened his first NCAA regional showing in strong fashion. The Frog freshman sits in a four-way tie for the lead entering day two after firing a six-under 66. He is joined atop the leaderboard by Ignacio Elvira (Texas A&M), Kevin Phelan (North Florida) and Dustin Garza (Wichita State).
Senior Travis Woolf is tied for sixth place and only three strokes off the lead at -3 following his opening-round 69, while freshman Pontus Gad and sophomore Johan de Beer both trail by only five strokes after shooting respective one-under rounds of 71, good for a tie for 12th place. Sophomore Eli Cole, who replaced an ill Tom Hoge in the Frog lineup, is tied for 39th at +2 following a first-round 74.
"Daniel played well in leading us today, but it was a great team effort overall," head coach Bill Motigel said. "Travis, Pontus and Johan also were all under par, so we got off to a good start."
Competition at the NCAA South Central Regional continues Friday at the Traditions Golf Club. Each of TCU's five players is scheduled to tee of between 9:10 and 9:50 a.m.
