Western Team Fifth, English Sixth at Nationals

WACO, Texas - The TCU Western squad collected fifth-place, while the Hunt Seat team placed sixth overall on the final day of the 2010 Varsity Equestrian National Championships.The No. 4 Horned Frogs dominated No. 3 Oklahoma State in Western, upending the Cowgirls 6-2 on Saturday afternoon. Overall, the Frogs went 3-1 in both Horsemanship and Reining, respectively. TCU outscored the Cowgirls, 1,123.5-979.5, at the Heart O' Texas Fair Complex.
Kelsey Huffman notched the Frogs first point in Reining, downing Leah Kuehn, 137.5-127. Carrie von Uhlit was also victorious in the event, scoring a 140-136.5 decision over Rachell Shobe. Kolby Simonson rounded out the TCU scoring in Reining, defeating Rachel Houchin.
In Horsemanship, Ashley Aikman recorded a 149-145.5 victory over Mamie Tomlin in Waco. Courtney Chown and von Uhlit tallied the other two points for the Frogs in Horsemanship.
On the English side, No. 12 TCU dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 6 Oklahoma State to earn sixth-place at nationals, which is the highest finish on the English side at the National Championships.
In Equitation over Fences, Lauren Quiroz and Callie Selchau each posted wins against the Cowgirls. Quiroz dominated Alice White, winning 152-111. Selchau closed her 2010 season, downing Ellie Sparks, 141-119.
Victoria Lee nearly scored a victory in Equitation over Fences, but battled Erin Prutow to a 153-153 draw. Haley Jacobi also posted a draw in Flat against Alice White.
"The Hunt Seat team made history at nationals. It was truly amazing to make it as far as we did, considering we were the underdog," said assistant coach Kindel Huffman. "Our hard work and dedication really paid off in the end."
In the individual bracket, von Uhlit closed her remarkable Reining career, falling to New Mexico State's Rebecca McReynolds, 137.5-136.5.
In Horsemanship, Huffman lost a heartbreaker to Texas A&M's Carey Nowacek, 144-143. Finally, Chown closed her season, falling to No. 1 seed Caroline Gunn of Texas A&M.
TCU closed its season at the 2010 Varsity Equestrian National Championships.
