Scherer Wins Smallbore National Championship

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frog rifle team got off to a good start in the NCAA Rifle Championships Friday afternoon with a second-place team finish in the smallbore portion of the competition. Freshman Sarah Scherer claimed the first-ever individual National Championship in rifle history with a score of 685.0 in smallbore.
Scherer was tied with two others entering the finals. She fired a 102.0 in the championship round to claim the national title.
Senior Erin Lorenzen also qualified for the finals. She finished fourth overall after firing a 99.6 in the final round, giving her a total of 681.6 for the match.
The Frogs put together an impressive showing in smallbore, finishing second behind Alaska with a score of 2,314, just six points behind the Nanooks. Scherer was the Frogs top shooter in the event, firing a 583. Lorenzen turned in a solid performance, qualifying in fifth spot with a score of 582. Sarah Beard shot a 579 and finished 10th among all competitors. Rounding out the field of four for the Frogs was Simone Riford, who fired a 570.
The competition concludes Saturday with the air rifle competition. The event will be held in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum beginning at 8 a.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and children.
