
Three Frogs Compete In Winter Airgun Championships

FORT WORTH, Texas - Three members of the rifle team recently competed in the Winter Airgun Championships at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Sarah Beard, Catherine Green and Sarah Scherer all took part in the championships December 3-5.
The championships were shot on an Olympic course of fire with each shooter taking 40 shots. Each day of the competition was a separate match.
On the first day of the event, Green and Scherer qualified for both the open and junior finals. Scherer finished second overall in the open with a score of 496.4. Green finished fourth overall in the open event. In the junior event, Scherer took home a gold medal after shooting a 496.2 and Green fired a 491.0 to finish third.
Scherer took home top honors in both the open and the junior categories on the second day of competition. She shot a 398 in qualification and scored 102.6 points in the final for 500.6 total points. In the junior event, Scherer shot for 499.7 total points with 101.7 points in the final and 398 qualification points. Beard finished fifth in the open and took home the silver medal in the junior event with 391 points in qualification and 102.4 points in the final for 493.4 total points. Green advanced to the junior women's final as well and took home a fourth-place finish.
On the final day of the championships, Scherer claimed the gold medal with 396 qualification points and a strong final of 103.7 points for a total of 499.7 points. Beard shot a 393 in the qualification and fired a 102.9 in the final to finish fifth. All three shooters qualified for the finals in the junior event. Scherer and Beard were locked in a race for second place going into the final shot. Scherer fired a 10.8 to come away with the silver medal and Beard shot a 10.6 to claim the bronze medal. Scherer shot for 396 qualification points and 101.2 points in the final, while Beard fired 393 points in qualification but shot her way up in the final with an outstanding 103 point final for 497 total points. Green finished fifth overall.
A three-day aggregate score from the Winter Airgun Championship was used to determine who would be representing USA Shooting at the 2011 World Cups. Scherer finished the competition at the top with a total of four champion titles and two second place finishes. As a result of her No. 1 ranking, she will be given the opportunity to compete in the Bavarian Championships in Munich next month. In addition, she also earned the opportunity to compete in four World Cups next spring - Australia, South Korea and Munich as well as the USA World Cup.
