
TCU Falters At New Mexico In 3-0 Loss

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The TCU volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (22-25, 14-25, 17-25) loss at New Mexico Friday night. The Horned Frogs were led offensively by Irene Hester with 11 kills and defensively by Jordan Raines, who posted 11 digs.Kristen Hester tallied eight kills and tied for the team lead with three blocks. Christy Hudson pitched in with four kills, four digs and one block. Meghan Horio dished out 31 assists and notched seven digs. Raines tallied seven kills, three blocks and served up the lone ace for the Frogs. Yvonne Igodan pitched in with six kills and one block. Kay Lin Connolly finished the math with 10 digs.
After falling behind 9-4 in the first set, the Frogs wisely used a timeout to collect themselves. The break was just what the Frogs needed to right the ship as they went on a 9-4 run to tie the set at 13. Igodan pitched in with two kills and Hudson three to get back within two, 12-10. A solo block and a kill by Kristen Hester made it a one-point contest, 13-12. Raines completed the comeback with an ace.
New Mexico responded with a 4-1 run that put it back in front by three, 17-14. The Frogs tried to keep the set close as Igodan and Raines dropped in two kills each to make it a 19-21 contest. Back-to-back kills by the Lobos squelched the Frog rally and they went on to claim the early match lead with a 25-22 set one victory.
A multitude of errors early in the second set put the Frogs in a deep hole that they couldn't climb out. New Mexico capitalized on the miscues and translated it into a 13-3 lead. TCU corrected the mistakes and tried to make it a set as it got kills from Irene Hester and Kristen Hester. A block by Raines and Kristen Hester made it a 9-18 contest. A 4-1 run by the Lobos put the set out of reach and they claimed the 25-14 set two victory for a 2-0 match lead.
Another early deficit in the third set proved costly for the Frogs as the Lobos completed the sweep with a 25-17 victory. The Frogs fell behind 6-3, but kills from Irene Hester, Igodan and Raines got TCU back within one, 9-10.
With the chance to tie the set at 11, the Frogs hit the ball long and that led to a devastating 8-1 run by the Lobos that put the set out of reach. TCU tried to use a late run to get back in the set and Raines and Kristen Hester battled hard at the net, but a kill from Taylor Hadfield locked up the win for the Lobos.
TCU falls to 13-12 on the season and 4-7 in league play. The Horned Frogs return to campus to host a pair of league contests beginning Thursday night with a nationally televised contest against Wyoming. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m. The match can be seen live on The Mtn.
