
TCU Closes Conference Play With 3-1 Win Over SDSU

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs wrapped up Mountain West Conference play with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 25-17) victory over San Diego State Wednesday night. The Frogs were led by Christy Hudson, Irene Hester, Meghan Horio and Jordan Raines, who all tallied double-doubles in the victory.Irene Hester paced the Frogs with 18 kills and added 15 digs. Hudson fell a kill shy of a triple-double with nine kills, 22 assists and 10 digs to go along with a pair of blocks. Horio posted 24 assists, 12 digs and led the team with three aces. Raines chipped in 10 kills and 14 digs. Kay Lin Connolly was solid in the backcourt with a match-high 21 digs. Yvonne Igodan knocked down three kills and led the team with five blocks. Kristen Hester finished with 11 kills, one assist, one service ace, four digs and one block.
The Frogs fought through seven ties and two lead changes in the first set but came away with the 25-23 victory. The set was close as both teams battled to a 10-all tie before a blast by Irene Hester was able to put the Frogs in control. The kill started an 8-2 run that gave the Frogs a commanding 18-12 lead. The Frog block was on as Kristen Hester had a solo denial in the middle, while Igodan and Hudson teamed on a block on the outside to put the Frogs up 17-12. A kill by Raines capped the Frog run.
TCU had to fight off a serious charge by the Aztecs as they closed the gap to two, 22-20. Irene Hester answered with her seventh kill of the set to push the lead back to three. Hudson gave the Frogs set point only to see the Aztecs rally to pull within one, 24-23. Raines ended the threat with her third kill of the set to lock up the set one victory.
Irene Hester broke a 1-1 tie in the second set to start a 6-2 run that would put the Frogs ahead 7-3. Kristen Hester and Raines were instrumental in getting the Frogs off to a good start as they tried to take control of the match. San Diego State rallied to get the set tied at nine, but a kill from Irene Hester broke the tie and put the Frogs in front to stay.
TCU used the Irene Hester kill and turned it into a 10-6 run that would put it up 20-14. Irene Hester, Raines and Connolly pitched in around multiple errors by the Aztecs. Again, the Aztecs would rally, cutting the Frog lead to three, 21-18. Horio had the answer in the form of an ace and Hudson followed with a kill to make it a five point contest. A service error by the Aztecs gave the Frogs set point and Kristen Hester knocked down a kill for a 25-19 set two win.
San Diego State dominated the third set as it battled to get back in the match. The Aztecs took control of the set on a kill by Lauren Salisbury that broke a 4-4 tie. San Diego State went on a devastating 16-6 run that effectively ended any threat of a Frog comeback. A Kyley Sexton kill locked up the 25-18 win for SDSU.
The Aztecs raced out to an early 6-3 lead in the fourth set, but three straight errors by the Aztecs got the Frogs right back in the set. Tied at eight another Aztec error put the Frogs in front and TCU rode the serve of Raines all the way to a 13-9 lead. Kristen Hester dropped in a pair of kills in the run and the Aztecs helped with two more errors.
Leading 17-12, the Frogs gave themselves some breathing room on back-to-back kills from Raines and an ace from Connolly. Hudson made it a nine point set, 22-13, with a service ace and a kill by Irene Hester gave the Frogs set point. Igodan put a stamp on the Frog victory with a loud denial in the middle that gave TCU the 25-17 set four win.
The Frogs improve to 14-16 on the season and finish MWC play with a 5-11 record. TCU will wrap up the 2010 campaign Saturday afternoon when it hosts USF at 1 p.m. Following the match, the Horned Frogs will pay tribute to their two seniors, Irene Hester and Christy Hudson.
