
TCU Stumbles In 3-1 Loss To BYU

PROVO, Utah - The TCU Horned Frogs dropped a hard-fought 3-1 (18-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-25) match at BYU Thursday night. Irene Hester led the Frogs with 19 kills, while Meghan Horio racked up a team-high 19 digs.Kristen Hester had eight kills and three blocks in the match. Sloane Sunstrum, Christy Hudson and Jordan Raines each tallied six kills apiece. Hudson set a career high with 32 assists. Irene Hester added a career-high eight assists, eight digs and three blocks to her stat line. Raines posted 12 digs and tallied two assists. Emily Kirby pitched in with two blocks.
The Cougars led wire-to-wire in the first set, storming out to an 11-4 lead. The Frogs tried to mount a rally after calling a timeout and managed to pull back within four, 13-9, following a 6-2 run. Kristen Hester started the rally and teamed with Hudson on a block to make it a five-point game. Raines pumped in a pair of kills and a block from Irene Hester and Igodan made it a 13-9 contest.
The teams traded points through the middle part of the set, but a 5-2 run by the Cougars put the Frogs back in a seven-point hole, 23-16. BYU closed out the 25-18 set one victory on a kill from Christie Carpenter.
TCU took control of the second set as it battled to get the match tied at one. Irene Hester blasted three kills and was helped by kills from Igodan, Kristen Hester and Raines to push their advantage to three, 9-6. Christina Meason wiped a kill off the block that started a devastating 8-0 run for the Cougars that turned the Frog lead into a 14-9 deficit.
BYU continued to push, extending its lead to nine, 19-10, before the Frogs righted the ship. The Frogs put together a 7-2 run of their own to pull back within four, 21-17. Kristen Hester and Sunstrum teamed up on a block and Irene Hester pitched in with a kill in the run. BYU rallied from three straight errors to get the momentum back on its side and went on to claim the 25-19 set two win.
After falling into a 3-0 hole in the third set, the Frogs came storming back as they went on a 7-1 run to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Raines started the rally with a kill. A denial in the middle by Kirby and Irene Hester followed by an Irene Hester kill tied the game at three. Sunstrum and Irene Hester blasted back to back kills and an attacking error by the Cougars forced a BYU timeout.
The Cougars tried to get back in the set, but each time the Frogs had an answer in the form of a kill from Hudson, Irene Hester or Kristen Hester. BYU used its second timeout and rallied to tie the set at 24, forcing a TCU timeout. Kristen Hester gave the Frogs the advantage and Hudson finished off the 26-24 set three win for TCU.
TCU raced out to a 10-7 lead in the fourth set. Hudson was a beast in the front, teaming with Kristen Hester on a pair of blocks and dumping in two kills. Sunstrum and Irene Hester were instrumental in the early run with three and two kills, respectively. The early run by the Frogs prompted a BYU timeout.
The break was what the Cougars needed and they rattled off six straight points to take a lead they would never give up. TCU tried to get back in the set on back-to-back kills from Hudson and Sunstrum, but BYU closed out the 25-15 set four victory on a 12-3 run.
TCU falls to 13-15 on the season and 4-10 in league play. The Frogs will head to Salt Lake City for a Saturday tilt against Utah. Match time is set for 2 p.m. (CST).
