
TCU Tallies Third Straight Win, Sweeps New Mexico

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU volleyball team stretched their winning streak to three games with a 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-23) victory over New Mexico Friday night. With the victory, the Horned Frogs stretch their conference home winning streak to 11 matches. Jordan Raines tallied her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and a career-high 19 digs.TCU hit .346 for the match, committing just eight hitting errors and racking up 53 kills. Irene Hester led all Frogs with 16 kills and pitched in with seven digs. Kristen Hester slammed down nine kills and picked up a match-high three blocks. Christy Hudson and Yvonne Igodan each finished with seven kills. Kay Lin Connolly notched 13 digs, while Hudson had 10. Meghan Horio served up two aces, tallied five digs and had two blocks.
The Frogs dominated the first set to the tune of 20 kills on 43 swings. With the set tied at three, a blast by Raines put the Frogs in front to stay. Back-to-back kills from Kristen Hester pushed the lead to three, 6-3. Irene Hester and Igodan joined the attack and helped the Frogs extend their lead to four, 15-11.
Trailing 18-14, New Mexico called a timeout and used the break to pull back within two. Raines again had the answer to push the lead back to three and the Frogs cruised from there. A kill from Horio gave the Frogs set point and Irene Hester finished the 25-21 set one victory.
A tighter affair greeted the two teams in the second set as they fought through 14 ties and five lead changes. New Mexico gained the early advantage, racing out to a 9-4 lead. The Frogs responded with a 5-0 rally with Horio serving to tie the set at nine. Hudson blasted two kills in the rally and Irene Hester tied the set at nine.
A back-and-forth affair ensued until the Lobos eventually worked themselves into a two-point lead at 20-18. New Mexico eventually found itself with set point, but a kill from Kristen Hester evened the set at 24. Outstanding defense by Kristen Hester helped the Frogs earn their first set point. After the Lobos tied the set at 25, Raines' defensive prowess kept the Frogs going and eventually led to an Igodan kill for the Frogs' second set point. An ace from Horio locked up the 27-25 victory.
The third set played out similarly to the second, but the Frogs eventually emerged the victors with a 25-23 victory. Again, the Lobos gained the early advantage as they took a 14-11 lead. TCU responded with a block from Horio and Igodan followed by an Horio ace to pull within one, 14-13.
New Mexico continued to cling to its miniscule lead, but the Frogs were eventually able to tie the set at 19 on consecutive blasts from Kristen Hester. A Lobo attack error put the Frogs in front for the first time since they led 4-3. With the set tied at 23, Hudson slammed down a kill for match point and a Igodan/Horio block on the outside locked up the 25-23 victory.
The Frogs improve to 12-6 on the season and 3-1 in league play. TCU hits the road for a pair of Mountain West Conference matches next week. The Horned Frogs will square off against nationally-ranked Colorado State on Thursday in a match that will be televised on The Mtn. First serve is slated for 8 p.m. (CST).
