FORT WORTH—The TCU women's basketball team was ranked No. 23 in the preseason Associated Press Top-25 poll released Friday, the highest preseason ranking in program history.
TCU received 117 points in the poll, ranking just behind No. 22 Iowa (121) and just ahead of No. 24 Vanderbilt (117). The ranking is the highest the squad has ever received in the AP preseason poll. The only other time the squad was included in the list of rankings was in 2003-04, when it found itself No. 24 to begin the season. That season, the Frogs reached their highest-ever spot in the poll of No. 13 late in the campaign.
UConn was voted No. 1 after receiving 39 of 40 possible first-place votes, while No. 2 Baylor received the other lone first-place nod. Five teams on TCU's 2010-11 schedule appeared among the poll's top-20 teams, including three in the top-11: No. 8 Texas A&M, No. 10 Oklahoma, No. 11 West Virginia, No. 19 Georgia and No. 20 Iowa State. San Diego State had eight points as the only other Mountain West Conference squad to receive votes, which was good for the 37th spot.
The preseason rating continued what is becoming a tradition for a TCU program used to finding its way into the national polls. The Frogs have now appeared in at least one of the two major national rankings in eight of the last 10 seasons, including each of the last three years. Last season, the squad peaked at No. 20 on Jan. 25, 2010.
TCU returns a roster stocked with talent for the 2010-11 season. Included in the mix is a pair of senior All-America candidates in Helena Sverrisdottir, the reigning Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, and Emily Carter, a first-team All-MWC selection a season ago. Sophomore Starr Crawford also has received preseason accolades following a breakout freshman season. Overall, eight letterwinners and four starters from last season's squad return.
The Frogs open the regular season at home Nov. 12 against Houston Baptist. Tip-off against the Huskies is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Tickets are available for purchase through the TCU Ticket Office by calling (817) 257-FROG or by visiting GoFrogs.com.
